My 5 year old son has not been well since last November. We have been back and forth to the doctor and the only response I get is it is a viral infection. His breathing is very wheezy and he has a constant chesty cough, however my doctor says his chest is clear?? He has had several colds in this period and numerous days off school. I again went to see the doctor who said it may be asthma but cannot be diagnosed until he is either 7 or has had 6 viral infections in a year?? I am convinced he may have a mild form of asthma as my mum, brother and sister all have it. Can anybody please give me some advice as I am really worried that he needs treatment and isn't getting it.
If the GP said it could be asthma, has he been given any kind of inhaler? When my then 5 year old (now 11) had a constant cough, they said it may be asthma but would only be able to tell if inhalers worked. they did. He has never wheezed and his chest is always clear. he has never had an asthma attack, but inhalers do help the cough and he does occasionally need them when swimming or doing pe.
My 3 year old twins are also 'suspected' asthmatics. everyone is treating them asthmatics and have done since they were 10 months. apparently they won't get a diagnosis until they are able to use peak flow meters and have their lung function tested.
Can I also say though that me (not asthmatics) and all my children have had what seems like a constant cold since november. as have lots of poeple i know. the gp and the asthma nurse have told me that loads of people are the same this year and there seems to be a very persistant virus aound

No they havent given him anything but calpol!! Its getting very frustrating as he is losing time off school and I am losing time off work. If they could justgive him something instead of constantly fobbing me off with calpol!!
Hi Stacey Maybe you could get your practice nurse to test your son for asthma by taking his peak flow and then make him jump about or run on the spot then try the peakflow again then give him some Ventolin and see if that makes his breathing easier If it does he could well have asthma I know the wheeziness and the cough are very annoying to listen to both at home and at school but they are very tiring for the child so hopefully you will have a better idea soon whether he has asthma or not and then you can start to treat it Hope your son is better soon and keep your chin up.
