Chilhood fears

My young son has developed a fear of his asthma, and continually worries of his conditions effects on his wellbeing.

Any suggestions on how I can re build his confidence and remove his fears

It's a shame that they've all finished for this year, but why not suggest he go on a Kick Asthma holiday? He will be amongst children with asthma, learn more about his condition and gain confidence in doing a variety of activities.

I would highly reccomend the kick asthma hols, my son has been 3 times and loves them. It really benefits the kids to spend time with others who have same meds and same worrys.

We have found it has helped my son to have a say in his treatment and be involved in decision making, to make sure he knows to tell someone if feeling unwell when at school/at friends, as hard as it is we have also tried not to wrap him in cotton wool (as much as i would have liked to!) so he has the chance to do as much in life as he can and knows his own limits , even though he pushes those limites to extremes at times!

If your son is old enough maybe he could talk to his asthma nurse about his fears and they could help explain things to him.

I hope you can find the info you need.

michael has recently been alot more aware of his condition (hes 4) and has started to ask why him and things of that type...hes very aware now of how bad he can get and sometimes can get a bit panicky if he gets a cough or if he needs a neb. i do try to explain everything thats going on and i let him be as involved as poss with his own care - he squirts his puffers into the spacer etc. it does help daytoday but at other times, it doesnt seem to bother him at all and he gets really bad because he hasnt told me he feels unwell, catch 22 i think!!!!!

Thanks for the suggestions.
