Not sure what you mean by this description. Do you mean that the lining on top of the bones in the knee is worn? I don’t have that problem but certainly can hear my neck creaking!

Hi, Although my knees have creaked since a teenager; they would often lock too and was very painful. Old sayings mention creaky knees in the elderly so I assume it's part of growing old and our limbs need oiling!

Have you had a proper diagnosis for your knee problem? What does it mean.... bone on bone knee arthritis? How does it affect you and does it mean you will need a knee replacement?

I have been told that I have bone on bone knee arthritis (osteoarthritis) but I also have Psoriatic Arthritis in my tendons and when I walk I don't hear anything but if I'm sitting still and lift my leg my knee makes a grinding sound (No one around me can hear it).

Hi,

I'm also new to this site. I have something called Chondromalatia Patellae (not sure if I've spelled it correctly). I'm in my mid fifties and have had this since early 40's. My knees crack when I go up stairs, like a kind of grinding noise too. They can lock or give way if I overdo it with exercise. I have also been diagnosed with Arthritis in my left knee but now my right knee has become worse than my left.

I have to walk up the stairs sideways to reduce the pressure and in case it gives way.

I'm just assuming that this is normal with what I have been told I have but I don't really know.

Hope this helps a little. Maybe best if you discuss this with your GP who might be able to tell you what the creaking is about.

Hi. I've got osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis with

Bone on Bone in my knees. I had a phone consultation with my Rheumatologist a couple of months ago, and they are referring me for a knee replacement, which I thought was strange as my drs been telling me that it's just normal wear and tear. As soon as I can get a appointment with my Dr I will be asking him what's going on. Not happy as I have been in agony for the last few years. Hope You can get your knee sorted soon.🙂

Hello Eileen1602

So very sorry to read of your knee problems, very disconcerting all the creaky cracking sounds that come from your knees plus the pain, it all adds up to a very unpleasant experience. Do your knees swell up when you have walked far?

I suffered with exactly the same symptoms a few years ago. I could not even kneel down. I have since had both knee joints replaced, both hips and both shoulders. I had the same problem with all my joints.

I was just told that it was “wear and tear”, sounds simple enough but it is not and l found it all a very unpleasant experience.

I do hope that you have a good doctor and surgeon should you require surgery. I wish you well Eileen1602.

Take care of yourself, best wishes footgo.

Hi Footgo

Just seen your post from 2 mths ago.

I started with left knee problem and 18 mths ago was told by Dr I had arthritis and too young (although over 60 ) for knee op . After months managed to get x ray and they decided yes you have severe osteoarthritis and you need op. Was referred for op 13 mths ago and scheduled to be done Mar but cancelled re covid . Hopefully will have it soon but in meantime other knee has become almost as bad and now have stiffness in back hip and neck ( have been told it is arthritis ( rheumatologist told me last year not rheumatoid arthritis although I have lot of psoriasis said no to that)

Was told since I have stenosis in neck and back so not sure what is arthritis and what is stenosis.

Knees now very stiff and have difficulty bending down.Do feel creaking in knees and back and shoulders at times and knees particularly left locks often whilst in bed at night.

I noticed you had both knees hips shoulders done snd like you knees swell up after activity and walkingand wanted to ask

1 ) Did you need to have much of a time gap between each op.

2) Did Drs make a point of prioritising ops eg did you have to have hip done before dodgy knee or vice versa.

3)What did you find was best medication for pain etc. as I am struggling to find the best option.

4) Are you in UK

Hope you don’t mind me asking these questions.

Thanks

Hello Eileen1602

Thank you for your message.

1) To be very honest l took the operations when they were offered. I was originally told that they could do one operation a year. In early February 2015 l had my right hip operation and in the operating theatre they found that l had an infection, the surgeon removed the old hip pumped me full of antibiotics. Two weeks later the surgeon opened my hip up again and ‘washed it out’ then sent me back to the ward. I was in hospital for five months, he sent me home without a hip in a wheelchair. When I recovered I was sent back to the hospital and they gave me a new hip. The right leg is now 12 mm shorter than my left. In September I had my left knee replaced. Not a pleasant year!! I was a wreck, for sure, l could not walk, could do very little for myself. I also spent a week in ICU as l had developed sepsis, plus allergic reaction to all the antibiotics and other medications.

2) l started off with my left hip, a wonderful operation. Then my right hip and left knee. Followed by my left shoulder, still in pain everyday. Then l had my right shoulder replaced followed by my right knee in the same year. Both amazing operations, 100%.

Plus l had my right wrist fused, three screws broke after six months the surgeon removed the metal plate, leaving the screws. In total l have had sixteen operations since 1999. My advice would be to take the replacements when they are offered. It is such a long drawn out procedure. GOOD LUCK!!

3) Medications!!! There is no such thing as a ‘pain killer’. I tried everything, steroids with steroid injections into the joints.

Please read and understand all the medications that you are prescribed, they are all toxic to my body. Some people can take everything with no side effects! I subscribe to the Mayo Clinic in America. They are amazing with information on everything plus the side effects. A very common medication that is offered is Prednisolone. This medication has very bad side effects. I took it for twelve years. I have had cataracts in both eyes, now suffer from osteoporosis, thin skin etc etc!

4) Yes l am living in the U.K. South West England.

I am very fortunate that I have an amazing wife who has literally kept me alive and sane. A never ending saga for sure.

I really do wish you all the very best, this Covid-19 has really put all operations too far into the future.

Look after yourself, Tim.
