Hi georgeburn.

So sorry to read your message. I have been suffering similar neck pain and anxious feelings when I wake up. For the anxious feelings, I have put it down to the time of year, and our general fight with our condition, My body seems to react as if it is grieving for something lost. (I have lost close loved ones, which doesn't help), but this is just the same feeling every morning for the past month, I'm sure its a combination. So for this, I do find for me, I lay and go through all the positives and negatives and then think of someone I can do something for today, then get up take my pills and start the day. (That may sound rather flippant, as my anxiety does pass once I have gone through this routine, but for many it is much more serious).

As for the pain in the neck, if you haven't spoken to your doctor, always good to check them out. And I have found there are a number of neck warmers from battery operated, microwave heated , electrical, and magnetic self warming, that are really helpful when it gets too much. To sit with one of these snuggled around the neck for half an hour or so at a time, (even a lovely warm thick scarf or small blanket) can make somewhat of a difference. It is all an experiment though, we are all so different in the way we react to pain, even though our pains are similar! No miracle cure I'm afraid, but maybe something amongst my ramblings may help !

Good to hear your hip operation is a success, I am sure this damp weather aggravates our condition too. I can't take naproxen sadly, so have to cope with codeine and paracetamol. Loathe to take anything stronger, so just plan my day really. I do hope you find some relief soon

Hi, So sorry to hear of the problems with your neck, I have had the same condition for years and it can make you feel pretty miserable.

I remember feeling very down when I needed to drive anywhere because I would have to turn the whole of my body as it hurt so much to turn my neck.

I also have Osteoarthritis of the spine, stenosis and disc issues.

I have 4 spinal fractures due to Osteoporosis.

Now because of my fractures and other problems there are many things that I can no longer physically manage these include lifting and carrying.

Try really hard to avoid the things that can trigger it.

Years ago I used to find if I lifted things or carried heavier items I would be in agony for days with my neck. I was given lots of advice and very gentle exercises to do,

Try not to carry shoping bags, use a bag on wheels instead, if you have to lift anything always bend from the knees and hold the item close to your body, and when you carry anything hold it close to your body.

I found that sleeping on my right side always resulted in not being able to move my neck the next day.

I had to train myself to sleep on my left side, not an easy task but it certainly worked.

One more thing check that you are using a good pillow that will give proper support to your neck, and keep warm as when we are cold we naturally tense our muscles which increases our pain.

Perhaps your doctor can send you for an xray to make sure there is nothing else that can be done to help you.

Do you think you could be feeling anxious in the morning because the pain will restrict the things you may want to do?

Hope you feel some improvent soon.

Hi this sounds just like me. Neck pain is constant but worse sometimes and in bed. I am taking Naproxen, helps a little.

Use a wheat bag every night and 2 paracetamol before bed. I sleep for a few hours.

I am flying to Malaysia tomorrow and not looking forward to the flight. Just thinking it could be worse at least I am still here and enjoying travelling.

Cheers.

Hi George, I take Lansoprazole, every morning. I recently stopped taking Pregablin, Baclofen and Imipramine. I had taken then for years and they didn't seem to help the pain. The Imipramine was to help me sleep, they worked but my stomach was not good and I didn't want to rely on these forever.

Paracetamol does sometimes help.

I have taken Naproxen for years too. They are usually good.

Hopefully heat in Malaysia may help and I can swim most days.

Hi, Yes it can be difficult to find a comfortable sleeping position because of other problems.

Because of my fractures I find lying on my back the most comfortable, but I have Hiatus hernia which causes reflux so I need to be more raised.

Ths then causes problems with my neck!!

Its a nightmare it really is.

In the past I was given Butranorphine patches these were quite effective at controlling the pain but I came off them as like all strong pain meds they can cause chronic constipation, which is something I have suffered with for as long as I can remember.

Last year I was put on Oxycodone, this was a godsend as without it I could not even move.

I am of low body weight so was limited to how high a dose I could go up to.

At the moment I have reduced it greatly with the help of the doctor. This is because I want to be able to go back on a higher dose if I have another fracture.

Oxycodone has had a lot of bad press but I have found if used sensibly and under the guidance of your doctor it is a very effecive medication.

I would not be afraid to increase the dosage again in the future as I now know if used correctly it is not addictive.

However as with any pain medication your body can become tolerant to it.

Rather than keep increasing the dose I think perhaps its much better to reduce for awhile if you can.
