Claiming PIP / ESA

Has anyone here with bipolar disorder had any success claiming PIP or ESA? If so, how did you articulate the challenges you face to the DWP?

I’ve just been dismissed on grounds of capability ill health, so now have no income and need to apply for benefits.

I get PIP for my bipolar. I applied when I came out of the MBU 2 years ago. It was an incredibly hard form to fill in, but I tried to explain that when in episodes I neglect myself completely, struggle to eat or drink enough, cooking is hard, I struggle to communicate and am a danger to myself. I would recommend contacting your local welfare rights and they will be able to help and know what the assessor is looking for. They would also be able to help with ESA (I get UC so can't help with ESA)

It's an awful procedure and most people get knocked back. I did, and was awarded it on mandatory reconsideration. I knew they were likely to say no, so I treated rejection as part of the claim process! My mandatory reconsideration I basically tore their report to shreds in a letter and explained why they were wrong and they changed me from 0 points to giving me enhanced rate. I say this to prepare you, not to put you off. Absolutely reply. Include any letters from your psychiatrist or care plans, especially if they give evidence of your day to day struggles. And good luck!

Hello Jessi_D

I’m so sorry to hear you have been dismissed and now have no income. It must be awful for you especially at this time of year.

I don’t have bipolar but wonder if Rethink Mental Illness, at rethink.org/ under the rights and restrictions tab would be helpful? It explains what the Work Capability Assessment is and what you can expect to happen in claiming ESA.

Citizens’ Advice at citizensadvice.org.uk might also be able to offer their advice at such a difficult time for you and your family.

Stay safe and take care.
