Hello all, I had a DVT & PE in September 2014 & was told by the Hematologist to stay out of the Gym, so have not been back since.
Do any of you ride a bicycle (not Motorized) as I'd like to do some exercise this way to help reduce the pounds I'm putting on & is it safe to do so, can you advise please?
Kind regards

Hi. Are you still on thinners? Im not sure why you were told to stay away ftom gym. Contact sports can be a problem but only so far as you need to be careful about bleeding if on thinners.
Hi Jules1712, thank you for your reply. Yes I'm still on thinners because at the point when the six month period was due to end I asked the surgery to ask a hematologist if it was safe to do this as I thought this DVT and PE could have been hireditory due to my farther dieing from a massive PE after a hip operation in the 60's & then my younger brother having a blood clot in his heart which killed him also. They did look in to getting a hematologist involved & I went for further tests for them to find it was so. Therefore I shall be on them for Life. I also have asthma & am diabetic too, so I have my hands full of problem s but still try to keep cheerful and do most of the time but finding the right food to eat can be a problem at times. But Hey, thank you for saying hello! Cheerful guy
I think these sites are good for getting info. Im only 3 1/2 months post unprovoked bilat PEs so still recovering and learning as i go along. What blood thinners are you on? Im on pradaxa for life and theres no restrictions on particular foods.
Hi cheerful guy. Because you have a few medical challenges it may be best to go to phyical therapy initally for your exercise. Please ask your Dr. about what your limitations are at this point and why Most Drs. approve swimming. In the meantime walks or leg pumps do wonders.
Hey, thanks for the advice & saying hello, I'll try the leg pumps too then.

Hi,
I was told to keep doing what I was doing and exercise was good for you , however I was not and do not intend going to a gym. Swimming is supposed to good for people with these conditions, better to ask the medical people e.g. GP, hospital consultant for a second opinion. Could try a search on good old google. Its about getting the balance of the exercise correct , the type of exercise and duration. Good luck.
Thank you lolm1951, (my thanks also to Ladyluck53 in my last post as I failed to mention there name.) d'ya know, exercise apart for a moment, I get quite confused with vit K & no vit C D E additions, as none of the medical professionals gave me any guidance really, just to keep vit k level, not up & down but how do you do this, for instance, with being diabetic type two...we eat loads of cauliflower in exchange for the potato, that is like cauliflower rice, mash & pasta, as cauliflower has less carbs in than potato, as we need to eat less carbs, so this makes it difficult, as cauliflower has loads of vit k in it. So It's not just about exercise is it but as you say, I'll check with the hospital & my GP re everything.
I was told to keep mobile but agree with jules1712 that contact sports could be a problem. I had a DVT/PE in April 2014 and whilst once I got some kind of strenght back I have cycled (not in gym) and attended my regular kettlebell class.
Hi ASlisonClark, I'm getting much the same advice from everyone & don't understand why the hospital staff advised otherwise but I'm gonna ride my bike a very little to begin with & do a longer ride after about a week. I'll let all know how I go on.
The only thing I can think of, is that the Hematologist said...NO, to me returning to the Gym & he added that I was still very much at risk but in him saying that, I was only just starting on Warfarin & going every week for blood tests so maybe thats what he meant but never said I could go back after I had got to grips with the warfarin or anything, so I'm left in limbo really. I used to like swimming as well but the last time I went swimming, I had an asthma attack whilst swimming & it has put me off it since, as it was quite a frightening experience.
I too am perplexed by your being told to stay out of the gym.
No contact sports was the only thing I was advised .
I do some form of exercise daily...yoga, swimming, cycling, badminton, pilates... (hasn't helped with any weight loss, but great for keeping the blood circulating and reducing the risk of further clots).
Get some further advice on anything unsuitable for your case, but I'm pretty sure there will me many activities you can join in with.
I also have had a DVT and PE resulting from the DVT. Am on coumadin for life. Also was a gym member for the last 10 years until recently when I started traveling. I have seen numerous specialists since then, over 10 years ago, and NONE of them ever recommended any reduction in exercise. I am now 70 and road ride upwards of 100 miles, mountain bike, and do strenuous hiking in the mountains of Colorado. In fact, several strongly advised against any reduction in exercise as the ramifications from that is a reduction on quality of life. I would see another doc.
Until about 2 years ago I ice-skated regularly, but have been told not to do that any more. But exercise is good (or it would be, had I any energy to do any, which I haven't!).
I was very active until I had my PE. I try do do lots now but find it difficult with scarring in my lungs. I get out of breath easily. Even doing housework. I agree no contact sport but walking is what I like best. I wish I was as fit as I used to be. Still finding it hard to get used to. Good luck with your recovery 😊
