Why does dorset refuse to supply Coagucheck Strips and pradaxa
I was also refused Pradaxa, being passed from hospital to GP and back again, both saying they were not permitted, although I was given some Pradaxa by the hospital on discharge. Basically I am intolerant of Warfarin which I took for two months previously (unstable INR even with heavy dose, hair loss, nail deformation and sleepless). I am an AFib sufferer, though now have a pacemaker also.
I wrote to the Department of Health who confirmed it was my entitlement to have this drug, provided I fulfilled their criteria, which I did on three out of five counts. I forwarded a copy of this letter to both parties and very, very reluctantly, my GP now does prescribe this and this will be for lifetime for me.
I have no ill effects whatsoever, taking 150 mg morning and evening. I know it is a matter of cost which prevents more prescribing of these type of drugs. However, those who elect to take them should be aware that there is a risk should major bleeding occur from any cause, say from a road accident etc, then there is much more of a problem in stopping this, unlike Warfarin, where an injection of vitamin K will reverse the anti coagulation. For myself, I weigh the advantages of no blood tests, no side effects, no dietary restrictions, all for life duration, as being well worth the risk - others may not.
Hi Matata, I've been challenging Dorst CCG about the strips for almost 6 months and haven't given up yet. They give rubbish reasons and say its not part of their policy. I've sent them references to the latest NICE consultative document on self testing which is totally supportive but all hopeless so far. I'm away at the moment, home tomorrow. If you want to join my fight you'd be very welcome.
