They tried it briefly - but not successful with me I'm sorry to tell you - due to anorexia being linked in with control - and my need to stay in control - I wouldn't allow myself to be hypnotised!! I found counselling and CBT especially more helpful - but all this is clearly a personal thing. Have you contacted ABC - they support parents and I know just how much the whole family need support - anorexia doesn't just affect the person - but the fall out can be tremendous on those around them.

Hi Adrienna, we tried it this summer with our 15 year old who had been anorexic for 3 years. I wouldn't say it is a cure but I think it did help her access some of her very deep emotions which she was bottling up. I think most hypnotherapists use a mixed approach, and I don't think my daughter was really 'hypnotised'. It seemed more akin to meditation and self-hypnosis. As crazycrosstitcher says, most anorexics are terrified of losing control, but my daughter always felt safe. She learned some techniques to help her when she feels anxious or stressed. I think it is an individual thing, but as our consultant said, it may not be evidence based but it can't really do any harm. So I'd say if your son/daughter is willing, give it a go, but use a therapist registered with the National Council - hypnotherapists.org.uk/

Good luck x

Thank you that was very helpful. It is difficult to know what is best.

I know what you mean. I take the view that we just have to travel hopefully. Each step along the way has something to contribute and we pray will end in recovery. Good luck x
