Allergic to Glycols

Does cigarette smoke cause reactions for people allergic to propylene glycol?

My husband smokes outside in the garage. Although there is a door separating the garage from the house, I can still smell the smoke. According to the internet, there is propylene glycol in his cigarettes (I'm allergic to both propylene and polyethene glycol). Does anyone else have reactions to cigarette smoke when they breathe it (or even the vape pen fumes)?

Yes, cigarettes and especially e-cigarettes contain the glycols and need to be avoided.

Yes. Why the heck are they putting glycols in cigarettes? auuugh. The vape liquid that contains PG, which is most of it, breaks me out if any of it contacts my skin. I think the vapes contain more than the cigs but it takes barely a molecule to break me out. Any chance your husband will switch brands? Because the smoke will stick to his hair, clothing, etc, and then when he contacts you, it'll be a bad time.

Are there any cigarettes that do not have glycol? He thinks as long as he isn't smoking while I'm in the garage that I will be fine. But I love working with wood and building furniture. Of course I do that in the garage. He has been telling me for 25 years that he going to quit. Now might be the time! He might not have an option now.

If he won't quit, it might be necessary to contact the companies that manufacture the cigarettes to see if any of them are glycol free.

What my husband did was switch to vaping an all-vegetable glycerin solution, using flavor extracts and other ingredients that are VG only and organic. This usually involves having to get the ingredients and make the solution yourself, which is a bit of a learning curve.

When I quit smoking, I used Wellbutrin (same as Zyban, just branded differently). That was before all the pills had glycols in them. Maybe it's time to go talk to the doctor about quitting strategies.

My husband has tried quitting several times. He told me he would quit when I got pregnant. then he said he would quit when I had the baby. My oldest child is 24! He has vaped in the past when he was trying to quit. Thanks for the suggestion though! I really don't want to tell him he needs to quit "cold turkey" because we all know that rarely works. It's an addiction - like my scrapbooking! I wouldn't just quit scrapbooking completely if there was an alternative!

It's really hard. It took me several tries plus medication to do it myself. But, if he knows it is directly harming you, perhaps that will give an extra push.
