Recently diagnosed with AF. Taking 100mg of Flecainide which has reduced occurance and 75mg Aspirin. Should I be taking Warfarin or similar?
It depends on your risk factors which your Doctor should have assessed. However I was low risk and was taking 100mg Flecainide and 75mg Asprin and was unfortunate enough to suffer a mini stroke some months ago. Luckily I survived unblemished but am now on Dabigatran as opposed to Warfarin which was my choice. It's easy to take and you can eat and drink what you want and there is no monitoring.
You have to assess your risk of taking a anticoagulant against the risk of stroke? Difficult one but after my experience I know what I would do. Hope that helps.
I was on 20mg Flec and 11mg Warfarin until 4 weeks ago when I asked if I could stop the medication as I am on so many - and I am in my 30s. The EP said to me that I wasn't a stroke risk, so he was happy for me to stop the warfarin. (I was on it for 3 years) If I don't go into AF again, he is happy for me to stop it completely. We are all different and as said above, it does depend on risk factors. I would ask you doctor or cardiologist for confirmation.
Meant to have said 200mg Flec.
I have Af and have been put on Warfarin, to prevent stroke. My AF is intermittent which apparently is more likely to cause blood clots.
I was diagnosed last August , I had a bad attack last week and spent the night in hospital, the only good thing I can say is thank goodness I am on Warfarin. I have had my medication changed to Flec 50mg, with the option of taking another tablet if I start to get an attack, seems a small dose to take compared to other people, but I guess we are all not the same!
Thanks for all your advice, I will ask the consultant asap as I am off ski-ing soon and am worried about flying.
