Bad Choices

Due to a mix-up in my pill taking regime, I ended up not knowing for sure, whether or not I had taken my Apixaban 5mg.

So the choice I had was either potentially miss a dose or potentially risk double dosing.

Of the two, which is the better of two bad alternatives?

I have occasionally in error skipped a dose.Still here .Mine was skipped for a day before surgery a few years ago .this is commonplace.Personally I would not wish to double dose.

Miss, never risk doubling up.

It is the general rule for all medication that if you miss your dose wait until the next dose is due before you carry on. Never double dose. It’s better to miss a dose and should not make much difference in the continuation of your treatment. If you double dose it can cause problems and serious side effects.

Miss a dose much safer than double dosing although I’ve done both - mistakenly taken a double dose but more often skipped a dose - it’s not critical as there will be active ingredient in your system for at least 24 hours.

Read the enclosed leaflet, it will tell you how to proceed.

miss a dose and then invest in the little pill boxes. Put your daily doses in them. Then you don’t need to remember- check the box, if it’s still there, you didn’t take it! I wouldn’t be without the boxes. I have about 40 of them, with the days on!

Lol as long as you can remember what day it is 😂I purchased a tabtime for mum off Amazon, brilliant piece of equipment. It's the size of a small tea plate and you can fill it up for days and times up to 2 weeks, you then set the clock. On the day/time it moves around (battery operated), sends out an alarm that continues until you tip the tablets out! Genius 😊

Not cheap at about £65 but worth every penny

Exactly what I do ... sunday morning I sort out all my pill requirement per day for the week ahead. Then all I gotta do is find the correct day and scoff the contents. Load all my little (3 compartment - morning, midday and evening) boxes with the right pills and ........ bingo !!

I personally would not take another dose until the next one is due

When I mistakenly double-dosed on my meds (Apixaban and Digoxin) the night before my ablation 😱I took the Apixaban in the morning as normal but left out the digoxin. The EP said I’d done the right thing and didn’t try to make me feel dafter than I already felt.

I was told to miss a dose to be safe. Far better than taking double,it also says this on the info sheet with your meds. Most people have done this at least once.

What I do is cut the pills into twos and leave them by the kettle so I take 1 at breakfast then the other 12 hours later. The pills come in foils so just divide them with scissors then you can tell if you've taken the morning one.Good luck.

not taking extra snd just take it when due next time

Perhaps get a dosset box if you don’t have one. Amazon do them for one, two or tree times a day.

I'm in the miss dose camp too and to put that into context, my pharmacist told me that Apixaban stays in your system longer than you think. I had particularly bad toothache a couple of years ago and had to wait for antibiotics to kick in before the dentist would do anything. Knowing Ibruprofen is best for dental pain, I asked my pharmacist about stopping the Apixaban for a couple of days so I could take Ibruprofen.

He said absolutely not, as I would need to stop taking the Apixaban for about a week to be safe from any interaction as it stays in your system a good while.

I did the same. Doc said don't worry about it just go back on schedule.

TY for all the comments. I did opt to skip the dose and get back on schedule the following day. I use those pill boxes. And that was the issue. I carry one for when I'm on the road, and one for home. I've since decided to just have one and use it both on the road and at home.Going to look into a TabTime on Amazon. Thanks for the suggestion. Karendeena.

Miss the dose ! Don't double dose.

Odds are good either way, I have done both. I don't really like taking extra of any medication. I would probably wait and see how I felt before taking another dose.
