Flecainide - dizziness side effect?

My cardiologist recently advised me to change from using Flecainide as a PIP to taking 50mg tablets twice a day.

A few days after starting this I became permanently dizzy so stopped taking the daily Flecainide and the dizziness stopped within the next couple of days.

I have another medical condition (not related to AF) which might have caused the dizziness so would like to know if anyone else has experienced dizziness related to daily Flecainide?

I have paroxysmal a-fib and was prescribed flecainide at one point by an electrophysiologist. The results were, after taking one pill, horrendous. I was extremely dizzy as well as feeling as if my head was no longer a part of my body (my hearing, eyesight, and stability were all affected). It was frightening. I could, of course, not function normally and never took one again. I went to another electrophysiologist who told me he would never prescribe that drug for my condition. It was just an extreme remedy I did not need. I don't know, however, if my experience can relate due to the fact that a-fib episodes are so different for each person suffering from them. The only fact I can offer is that my current electrophysiologist when asked what causes a-fib, is ... he / (they) don't know...an honest assessment. We only know there are triggers...different for each person. Hope you can gain some control over your episodes...the best we can hope for.

Thanks - I’m absolutely fine when I take Flecainide on a PIP basis - sometimes 3x100 mg in a day.

I had the same experience. So I stopped taking flecainide regularly but am using it as PIP

Had the same problem, try taking it as PIP. It works

Did you also switch your a daily nodal blocking agent such as a beta blocker or diltiazem?

If not that it could just be your body needs time to get used to it. When you take a PIP, it's a whole different dynamic because I'm assuming you're in atrial fibrillation at the time. What did your doctor suggest you do?

Flec can be a great drug so I would give it time if you can. If not, there are other antiarrhythmics and of course getting an ablation.

I was given to 50mg bd. I only took one dose as, although that day I was fee of AF and ectopic beats, I did feel odd, not dizzy, though, just very aware of my heartbeat for the whole day.

I haven't taken to since so it sits I the cupboard, as my symptoms are not so very uncomfortable, thankfully.

I have been taking 3 x 50mg a day since 2003. I had dizziness at first for a couple of weeks but it settled down after that. I lot depends on what other medication you are taking, if any, for your heart.

I don’t but I do spend much of my time in bed at 80, having acquired chronic fatigue around the same time as the PAF as the result of a shingles virus when I got the pain before the rash and couldn’t get an appointment at our surgery when an antiviral might have saved me from both. We are all different though. Good luck sorting out what works for you.

I have been on daily Flecainide (without bisoprolol) for a number of years, having started as PIP. I have never suffered dizzness until very recently, when I had taken the full permitted dose. My cardio told me that at this amount, it mimics a betablocker and produces lowered BP. You need to discuss this with your EP/cardio.

We are all different Vernasca but I had no problems being on Flec 2 x 50mg daily. I dred going on any meds as I always get tum troubles. I only noticed one thing my IBS improved as had mild constipation which made a nice change from diarrhoea🤭

Thank you to everybody who has replied - as is often the case with AF, different people react in different ways!

The reason why I asked for experiences of others is that the change in Flecainide from PIP to daily was in accordance with advice from my cardiologist to try to reduce exercise induced AF.

My other medical condition which can sometimes cause dizziness is an inner ear (vestibular) problem.

It hasn’t been possible to tell which condition caused this bout of dizziness so I’ll have another try at daily Flecainide.
