Ppi's with bisoprolol and Apixaban

Good Evening

I take Apixaban twice daily 5 mg and Bisoprolol 2.5 mg and Candesartan

I also take Omeprazole for Gerd which was recently has been when i need it as i take gaviscon before bed

My question is :-

The specialist has prescribed Omeprazole now on a daily basis

However i am interested to know if its ok to take my other together tablets at the same time as omeprazole ( before i eat breakfast )

I read the at Omeprazole can reduce the effectiveness of the Apixaban but not sure if that is old information or not

I know i need to ask my GP but i can't get in till next week and i'm worried about this in case my Apixaban is not doing what it should

If anyone can put my mind at rest or even let me know if they know anything about the interaction i am talking about i would be really grateful

Maybe i should stop taking Omeprazole until i get some answers but i understood it gives me protection from bleeding in my stomach from the Apixaban

Thank you in advance

Yes, you can take them at the same time. I did after consulting with both my doctor and pharmacist.

You may be confusing ppi's like Omeprazole with antacids. With antacids, you have to be careful about the timing with other drugs. While PPI's reduce stomach acid production they are not antacids. Listen to your specialist.

Why not take your Omeprazole an hour or two after your usual morning meds? That should lessen the slight interaction.

You can take them at the same time. I take mine with my first drink in the morning. I then take my anticoagulant with breakfast which can be approximately half an hour or more between the two medications. I think some take their PPI’s in the evening. Again, it’s an individual thing and what works best for you.

I take it for my reflux and wouldn't be without it for that as it is so bad. If I had my time over again, however, I would try every other way except taking it to first control the acid since, although undoubtedly unusual, all the PPI drugs can have important side effects that, if they do arise, mean it must be stopped - and stopping a PPI is nigh on impossible.

Hi MollandFred, every now and then I have to take a course of omeprazole, and I was told by one pharmacist that it is fine to take at the same time as my Apixaban, Bisoprolol and Ramipril. But a different pharmacist recommended taking the omeprazole 30 mins (or more) before the other meds, so that’s what I’ve been doing. Omeprazole when I wake up with some water, and then the other meds 30 -45 mins later. (But I feel it can’t be that crucial as my own pharmacist said ok to take together!)

Can I ask if you separate your Apixaban evening dose from your Gaviscon? I’m not sure what the advice is with meds like that.

Good Morning

I've just read your reply and i do seperate my Apixaban evening dose with Gaviscon.

I take my Apixaban around 8 pm and then wait until just before i go to bed to take Gaviscon.

So i usually wait 2 hours

This is not usually a problem, i have a bit of a worry on a morning

I take my Apixaban around 8 am and the Oneprazole at the same time

I then have breakfast an hour later but sometimes i then get an urgent need for the toilet and i am worried that i am then just losing the medication i took

So i wait till after my toulet trip to take my Bisoprolol and Candesartan

If you understand what i mean

Anyway sorry fir the long answer but , in short, yes i separate the Gaviscon by at least an hour between my meds

Just let me add that PPI's like Omeprazole are more effective 30-60 before a meal. This has nothing to do with into drug interaction, just simply because the food helps activate the ppi's.

My GP and Cardio both agreed that I could take at the same time and I have been doing so since I started on my Af meds 7/8 years ago though I no longer take bisoprolol as I didn't get on with it just on apixaban now.
