Just heard about this worrisome consequence. No real statistical evidence nailing it down with any certainty or the mechanisms . Lots of premises though…one is that ablation seems to mitigate slightly. Anyone have any info?

Yes, I've read somewhere about the higher incidence of getting Alzheimer's if you have AF. I chose to ignore it (but the niggle is in my head). My memory is so bad these days that I'm sure I must be on the slippery slope already.
Do you really want to know if your chances are increased?

I think it’s more likely to be vascular dementia from mini strokes or low oxygen with fast AF?
The mechanism is micro embolii escaping form the fibrillating heart to small areas of the brain. Good rate control and anticoagulation should reduce any risk.
Thank you. I listened to a podcast with extensive interview with Dr Hugh Calkins , a renowned electrophysiologist at John’s Hopkins in the US. he emphasized this enough to stop me in my rate controlled persistent steps. He made it sound as a given. Also I am wary of drs pushing medical devices I.e.watchman who may stand to gain from ..he suggested the new second generation works better. Who to believe…..always look forward to your very informative posts. My husband was a huge car nut with a collection…know you share his passion.
I am always wary of the possisbility of financial gain affecting medical advice. Here in UK there are some drugs such as statins which carry incentives for doctors to push is some circumstances.
Share passion but finacially limited to building other peoples pride and joy.
