bisoprolol

Hi all! I have been taking Bisoprolol for a few years now, so I’m not sure if it is connected, because I just can’t remember the actual dates. I started a dry cough out of the blue, no mucous, no wheezing, just irritation. The cough was/is often exacerbated by spicy food, toothpaste (bizarrely) or when what seemed like a spasm happens at the base of my throat. The coughing can become uncontrollable, usually ending in much gagging, tears streaming and embarrassment if I’m shopping or in a restaurant etc.

I also have fibromyalgia, so that could be the cause too, or so I’ve read.

Does anyone else experience coughing from this medication I wonder?

Yes bisoprolol can cause this along with fatigue and breathlessness. It did with me so they tried me on other medications to find one that didn't. For me they didn't find one but you should ask to either have the dosage changed or a change of medication if this is affecting your quality of life.

That sounds like a bronchospasm or asthma - I suffered exactly like that for years until a doctor tried treating me for asthma, with magical results. I had a very bad bronchospasm a few days after starting a tiny dose of bisoprolol so I would be surprised if it’s a reaction after all this time but I would see a doctor urgently.

Hello there, Yes, I do. It's grim. Stopped taking it for a week and was great. Re-started and as bad as ever. Now I need to see GP to get it changed or stoppef

I've been on bisprolol for a couple of years and have recently developed a dry cough too and throat often feels irritated, not sore but scratchy. My GP thinks it's related to taking bisoprolol.

Are you sure this isn't related to acid reflux, particularly as you say about the spicy food? I have had intermittent atrial fibrillation for years, but I have suffered for years with acid reflux which can cause a cough. I was also convinced toothpaste was a cause of problems so I changed my brand.I took bisoprolol briefly but stopped as it made me feel tired all the time. Not taken it for years.

This is exactly what I suffer from though very irregularly. You can guarantee it will happen when I'm at a concert or the theatre and I HAVE to leave the room because it absolutely overwhelms me to the point I think I could die.I didn't put it down to Bisopropol but you could be right.

Also I can't have normal toothpaste and managed with a small amount of Kingfisher fennel.

I do have silent acid reflux so yes it could be part of the symptoms of that.

It is so scary that I would love it if someone could come up with something to resolve it.

Hi

Bisoprolol is recommended for AFers rather than Metoprolol.

You are taking so little dose.

re Toothpaste I use bicarbonate of Soda or Redseal Soda Toothpaste. No fluoride, Chlorine as it affects thyroxine and fr 'normal' folks it could interfere with their thyroid function.

Asthma can appear later in life whllst my adopted son reckns his has gone after losing weight and n red eat.

I have a blocked left nostril sometimes due to a cyst showing in my CT scan in my left sinus.

In am allergic to oestrogen cream taken by rubbing on your body (I came up with bleeding exema behind leg and was allergic to oestrogen patches in 1990s. Since then they have changed something because I cam safeky have them again. Allergic to brown elastoplast. Allergic to Iron Bark eucalytus tree oily flowers in the air.

My sister had excema down both arms as a child and Mum tarred her.

Cough and rashes are very annoying.

After having my Flixonase without 6 hours I can't stop sneezing! And I can get everything that goes with it as I do coughing.

Life is rough sometimes.

Thanks for that Joy. Didn't know chlorine affected the thyroid. My readings are just above the line but the GP has passed it as okay. I read that selenium and L-Cetyl Carnitine both help the thyroid so I have just started taking them.I have permanent Afib and wasn't given any other choice but I am living with it okay and still pretty fit and active.

I also take mag glyc, taurine, Coq10,zinc,B and D3K2 and probiotics. The nurse practitioner has put me on 3 weeks of esomeprazole as I said my voice is getting more and more hoarse and she said the ear, nose and throat Consultant would not look at me until I'd been on esomeprazole for a minimum of 3 weeks.

Sorry to bore you and I do wish you well

Hi

Remember natural foods/oils best.

My T3 was lower than normal and I found eating 2 brazil nuts a day brought it up immediately. Now at 4. The lower end but OK. It has brought up my energy.

Coq10 is your unsweetened yoghurt, fruit and veg.

Remember Taurine is with your Bisoprolol and highest found in scallops. Ihad 4 yesterday but do make sure the orange roe is attached!

As I said seleneim is in beef liver, sardines, brazil nuts. Highest.

I don't take any except B12 because of deficiency. Solgar range best and trusted. And under tongue to go the route of your blood is best for absorption.

I found Healtheries Vit E 200 but care because of on PRADAZA 110 twice a day.

Fish Oil Supplements for Heart patients only us but it can get toxic if too much.

Oh dear lots of expense to pay on supplements.

Take care and eat healthy 5 x servings of fruit / veges a day.

I haven't had COVID ever and no flu this year. Summer is coming HERE.

I'm excited that my small broad beams are popping! I'm picking 3=5 a day. Eat all of it.

Cost me $2 for 6 plants. In 3 pots and a 3 in large circular one. Lettuces self-seeding. With parsley.

Great no spray etc. Feed well.

Hi

I had coughing with an ACE Blocker so they have been banned. Breathless with Metopolol and pauses at night No control of Rapid H/Rate or very ittle 185 bpm Day so also been banned.

Hospital Heart Specialist changed me to Bisoprolol. No cough no breathless but even low med 2.5mg at night for high systollic but less so diastolic is best for BP.

Later with private heart rate give diltiazem a godsend for heart rate. Dropped from156 to 51 on 180 (1/2 dose) mg in 2 hours.

Reduced to 120mg CD. Take AM.

Bisoprolol take PM.

Been on this regime for 2.1/2 years plus PRADAXA 110mg twice daily.

So no coughing. Is it pollen season at yours? No privit?

Yes I get bouts of this and also have CFS, asthma and heart failure and im also on Bisoprolol. Its also when I'm eating sometimes and as you say can be very embarassing but I have no idea which causes this 🤔

Jeanette49 profile image
Jeanette49 in reply toSue6666

Yes, eating is often a trigger for me too. It seems that my throat is super sensitive, and sometimes a small piece of food starts a chain reaction. Particularly difficult if you are in a restaurant. I often have to go to the loo to get the coughing and spluttering under control.

If my throat seems dry, I can feel a tickle starting which can turn into a full blown episode. It definitely isn’t from my chest, although I would imagine that all of the coughing and gagging probably makes my upper airways constrict, then it’s hard to pull air into my lungs, feels like I am going to die!!

That's more or less exactly like I get..just as well we don't eat out together lol xx

I have been on metoprolol for a while and it seems like since they increased the dosage my dry tickly cough has gotten worse. I too suffer from bouts of tickly cough sometimes gagging and sometimes tears streaming down my face. Maybe beta blockers cause this cough? Of course if you ask the cardiologist he'll say no relationship since that's what he always does with side effects.

Not what you're looking for?
