Constantly falling asleep

Hi there,I have had AF for a year. I've had I cardiv which failed after 6 weeks. My AF has been getting quite bad for over 6 months. I am trying to loose weight and so far lost a stone. I am swimming, walking for about 1.5 hrs and do yoga. The problem is now I am constantly exhausted. As soon as I sit on the sofa I fall asleep . The average is 2.5 hrs sometimes 4 in the middle of the day if I'm not woken up. My legs also hurt alot sometimes, particularly my thighs. I am eating a healthy balanced diet. Anyone got any ideas how to control the fatigue 😩 Does anything work for you ? I have another consultation in a month . Been waiting a year since cardiv for this, they may offer an ablation. The GPs said my drugs could be part of the issue but won't touch the dosage unless cardiologist does it. They've written 3 times since Christmas, nothing has happened.

Hi there .......... so what drugs are you on and how long have you been on them ? Your tiredness/fatigue sounds a bit like me ( although I'm at a fairly healthy weight ) and I've had no cardioversion nor ablation ............. just relying on medication and diet - and have done since the beginning in Jan 2010. Also, it has to be said .......... I don't exercise, well, not like you do anyway.

Well done for losing a stone! You're obviously determined and working hard. You could try emailing the cardiologist yourself. I did, and within a couple of weeks he changed my medication. You should explain how you are in detail so he has a full picture. If you don't have an email address for him you can ring his secretary and ask for it.

Hi

My Hospital H/Specialist was good at tests like 24-hr H/Rate Test with every change of med.

But if she was interested she would have found that 135bpm avge Day was over 100 and still unacceptable. I was then up to 10mgs daily Bisoprolol.

I even wrote to her admitting that I did not have QOL. Nothing.

So under Dr Locum's referral I went to a private/hospital H/Specialist and he found me at 135H/Rate at rest. Added Diltiazem a CCB and it came down to 86-96.

I was able to have the 2 latest operations (not heart). One in 2022 and one in 2023. Anaesthetists said OVER 100 sorry we will not perform this operation. For the last one I lost 3 kg and I'm now 60s h/rate day.

But in 2020 when I had my thyroidectomy I was discharged on Metoprolol with heart rate 135. No followup. Forgotten. I wis the Surgeon had had that circled.

It was another year before I asked for a Heart Specialist to have that changed to Bisoprolol. But overall BBs did not control my H/Rate to under 100 a private specialist did.

I say Heart Rate under control can be done by a H/Specialist not a EP.

Diltiazem is acts as a safer anti-arrhymic med than the likes of Flec which I cannot have anyway. Abnormal heart severely dilated left atrium.

Hi Joy,

That's what my cardiologist has changed my medication to, I was on Bisoprolol and now it's Diltiazem. I've only just got them from the pharmacist so I hope I will feel better with them 🤞.

Hi Sailblue. I found Afib made me tired even without all the cocktail of drugs some people take. The biggest plus of having the ablation is I have my energy back! But there are many reports here of medication causing or exacerbating fatigue. And there are medications that improve things. You have waited far too long for an appointment and I wonder if you’ve considered making a private appointment. You’d pay £200 - £300, have time to get all your questions answered and be able to discuss potential treatments. Choose an EP who works both privately and with NHS. I know it’s shocking that so many people are having to turn to private consultations, but if you want your life back it’s worth considering.

Have you been checked for sleep apnoea? It's known as a possible trigger for AF and also tends to make folk sleepy during the day, as they haven't slept well (sometimes not knowingly) during the night.

Have you had your thyroid function checked (its a simple blood test)? I felt like you do now and it was discovered I had an underactive thyroid. Well done with your weight loss.

What medication are you on? I had to stop taking Bisoprolol because it gave me painful aches in my legs.

Hi

At least the GPs have written and obviously you don't get into the urgent list.

I've just had a big day out. Dr, driven 74 kms, pictures to seeThelna FUNNY, shopped had a nice Jerusalem Cafe meal and drove home.

I fell asleep after my dog JAZ was fed at 5 ish. Now 8.30 so had a nice sleep.

Checked emails. Oh I did wash the car in the rain on arrival.

It does not and cannot worry me.

I live alone, retired.

But I see with you may be a change. I take a CCB for Rate control. BB for Ststollic Rate control.

The exercise would do it too. Af is itself a limiting exertion affliction. AF Affliction Failure.
