Some forum members have found that supplementing with Magnesium and Taurine has helped reduce their AF attacks. Dr Sanjay Gupta of York Cardiology (UK) has made a YouTube presentation on this subject, alongside lots of other helpful ones regarding AF.

Hi Jean

Luckily my AF is controlled at present by a cocktail of meds. The longstanding AF has caused a worrying reduction to my EF. I am looking to see if there is anything I can do with supplements to improve this.

I'm not sure what you mean by EF?

I've been having acupuncture regularly as well as taking Edoxaban. I use deep breathing when I have an episode to try and restore NSR. If that doesn't work I go for the Flecainide PIP. I take Magnesium Taurate as Jean suggests. I eat better - organic whole food and avoid food with additives. I meditate more. I've changed the way I live and listen to my body and reactions more, in order to identify and reduce stress.

EF refers to Ejection Fraction which is a calculation done when an echocardiogram is performed to assess the heart function. If EF is low then it can be an indication of ‘heart failure’.

Thank you CDreamer for explaining EF ..

I'm sorry Kernowafibber I don't have experience of this, I hope you find some answers that help ,,

Improved diet, reducing stress, magnesium compound plus CoQ10 and prayer have probably been my best alternative treatments.

Had 11 yrs virtually AF free with the help of 200mgs Flecainide. Now awaiting diagnosis of a new stage of ectopic like symptoms.

My ablation reversed both the reduced EF and mild regurgitation when I had persistent atrial flutter.

Thanks for the replies. It's really experience of alternative ways of improving the ejection fraction that I was looking for. I have read that Hawthorn can do this. I was looking for any experience of this, especially when taken alongside other meds. Thanks

Any herbal supplementation with other med you should consult a qualified professional with herbalism and medications.

Mineral and vitamin blood checks could be advisable as too much could cause issues.

I have been a multidiscipline therapist but NOT herbalist, so cautious as the herbs etc may interact.

Hi. Thanks for your reply. I will attempt to run my thoughts by my cardiologist but as you will know most consultants are completely blinkered to any medicines not tried and tested by 'Big Pharma'. There are some Cochrane reviewed studies out there but I wondered if anyone had personal experience.

My cardiologist has started me on Farxiga for its effect on improving HF, along with sotolol for AF and losartan for BP. Still on Eliquis, but active and feeling pretty good.

Tbh, that will be a waste of time, better to look for a qualified herbalist or integrated health therapist. Ive had a consultant cardiologist for many years, he listens, smiles and thats it, forget Complementary therapy. He’d actually mis-diagnosed my ‘Fibrillation’ some years ago, said I’d Supra Ventricular Tachycardia, The Prof said it wasn’t and told him😏 think I’m done with him and will need to either go back to The Prof or find a different Consultant cardio when req’d.

I am cautious integrating herbal remedies with medication, just don’t know if there’ll be interaction. Sadly the orthodox drugs all have side effects, sometimes worse than the condition. The life style changes can only be good to do in any event.

Good luck, if you’d like to ask me questions, fee free on messages and if I can or do have an opinion your welcome to it. 😜

We started the Stephen Sinatra Metabolic Cardiology protocol for HFrEF a couple of years ago (was already on some of the supps for longer standing heart issues ) then this years as afib was diagnosed switched the dosages up for that (same supplements).

HFrEF first diagnosed 2022 via echocardiogram and just had a second echocardiogram showing no improvement in EF but also thankfully no deterioration after the addition of persistent afib.

So are they working?! I can’t say. For now happy with no deterioration and fewer prescription medications (very intolerant) so will carry on with the supplements.

If you are curious I highly recommend Stephen Sinatras book “Metabolic Cardiology” at the back after all the scientific/biology chapters he summarises treatment protocols for various conditions (not just heart related).

Investigate the use of B1 - the Benfontiamine version especially. And the teachings of Dr. Joel Wallach concerning the reversal of heart failure with the use of vitamin B1 and other vitamins and minerals. Also investigate Wallach's old radio programs on YouTube.

I tried hawthorn but it didn't help. It can cause problems so research it well before you try it.

I found that Nascent Iodine worked for me me but, again, you need to do your research before using it. I also found that Earthing myself worked really well - and really quickly too.

I was getting 30,000+ ectopics a day and my HF was at level 4.

Ectopics almost gone after less than a week of regularly earthing myself.

I still get occasional ectopics- but so does everyone else so I'm not concerned about them and my HF is now classed as "mild" and my EP discharged me.

That was about seven or eight years ago and I'm still OK.

It was the ectopics that were causing the HF. My heart was getting so many signals that it got confused and so my EF was below 20%.

Earthing myself made sense to me because I was seeing an EP at the time and I realised that the "E" stands for electro. Our hearts are electrical devices and electrical devices generally need to be earthed. We are surrounded by electric devices. We wear rubber soled footwear and walk on carpet and vinyl, we rarely touch the earth now like our ancestors did so I decided to rectify this and it worked (for me).

There's a lot of info online about Earthing that's worth considering.

If you can feel your ectopics (some people can't) then try standing barefoot on grass, sand, concrete (wet grass is best) for 20 minutes and see if the ectopics subside. You can take a chair and a cuppa into the garden and sit for a while as long as your bare feet are touching the earth.

"What's Mother Nature doing and how can I fit in with that?" Is my usual place to start.

If you try to defy Mother Nature - as many do - you will lose!

I would like to know more about "Earthing". Thanks.

I think Hawthorn is said to have anticoagulant or blood thinning properties - if we're on allopathic anticoagulants it could double up the effect which wouldn't be good. It's sad that more funding hasn't been put into studying herbals.

Earthing makes a lot of sense. How nice it is to walk on the earth with bare feet ....

I have found acupuncture and yogic breathing really helpful for AF.

I reduced salicylates and oxalates in my diet to improve symptoms. Also cut out gluten, sugar, refined carbs. Alkaline diet to reduce inflammation. Complex but effective for me. I only drink spring water and use sea salt, not table salt. Seed oils also cause inflammation in the body. If you eat a lot of plant foods, the oxalates and salicylates can be problematic.

I went on a strict kidney diet (no sugar, no sweeteners, no animal protein, little processed food, lots of fruits and nuts and vegetables) when I found out my kidneys were starting to fail, on top of afib and other health problems. There were no pills to take for kidneys then, only this diet. After about 6 months, I had to reduce all my afib meds because my heartbeat was too slow and I was dizzy sometimes. Then I noticed I had more energy, my heart health had improved significantly, and I was no longer having AF episodes. Anyway, that's my experience. Stop looking for a magic pill. I know there's Farxiga now to improve kidney function but I'm happier not having to deal with medicines and all the side effects, not to mention the expense here in the US, land where only the drug and hospital corporations are free range and patients have to struggle for the care they need.
