I recently got diagnosed with persistent AF along with an Atrial Flutter which has been going on around 8 weeks. It was picked up in during a Echo. The same Echo also picked up a mildly dilated left ventricle with an EF of 30%.
I'm on meds to help with HF(see bio) and my Cardiologist believes that AF is the cause of the low EF.
We are planning an Ablation ASAP, hopefully in the next 4 weeks. Has anyone had a similar experience and seen an improvement in their EF after Ablation?
Assuming the Ablation won't keep AF away forever, Will it always cause a low EF for me or is every episode potentially different?

Terminating AF can reduce or reverse HF but it is obvious that damage has already been done so it may never be 100%. We are all different and you are quite young so good chances. Ablation has possibly the best chance of stopping the AF but be aware it may need repeating.
AF and atrial flutter can alter heart function, and untreated arrhythmias can reduce cardiac output and left ventricular output and can be associated with a low EF. Your cardiologist’s recommendation for ablation surgery is standard practice; many people find that their heart function is better after ablation if it normalises the rhythm of the heart.
Some patients report improvements in EF following ablation; others only modest results. This can vary, depending on how long the arrhythmia lasted before ablation, the health of the heart muscle etc.
When it comes to repeating AF episodes, I don’t know. While AF can cause a decline in EF, not all episodes will lead to permanent impairment; the heart has remarkably high healing capabilities, especially when arrhythmias are managed. You will need to be monitored continually and closely by your medic following the ablation.
Good luck

PS. I am not a doctor so this information is something to discuss with your EP and cardio who will be 'in the know'.
I have had af on and off since 2019 amioderone controls it but when i stop the drug it comes back but much worse ...I cant function and my lungs flood . last time I went to a and e they refered me for an Ablation ...that was in May 2024 , i got to see the ablation surgeon 3 weeks ago and my next "you are on the list appointment" is in October 2025
My AF caused HF and mitral regurgitation. EF was 28% , Ablation March 24, EF now 57% , off most drugs now. MR gone from severe to mild. HF is reversed. However it's a label that stays with you for life as it can come back
