Hives and itching.

Hi all, I have been diagnosed with afib in August 2023 and currently take Edoxaban and my Bisoprolol was increased from 1.25mg to 2.5mg. I was originally on Apixaban but developed an intolerable itch with hives on legs and body. My cardiologist changed my Apixaban to Edoxaban and the hives eased for a while but are still there although not as annoying. Anybody get this reaction.

I haven't but I would be trying a different one again if it hasn't gone away and hope that is better. How annoying. Itching is said to be helped best by the older types of antihistamine but they also have sedation as a side effect in many people. I have used a cream containing crotamiton called Eurax, which worked well when I had itching from a different cause.

I suffered from urticaria/ hives which was definitely caused by Bisoprolol. I am asthmatic as well as having permanent, though asymptomatic, AF. For many years my AF treatment was just Flecainide, with Warfarin. Once my AF had become permanent I no longer took Flecainide.During a hospital operation under a general anaesthetic my heart rate went over 190bpm. Subsequently a hospital doctor, status not known put me on Bisoprolol. I was fine for 7 weeks, then the itching started. I was weaned off Bisoprolol. The urticaria continued in a lesser form. I was prescribed Ceterizine which worked well.

Thank you I will try the Ceterizine as I have been using hydrocortisone cream which only works for a short time.

You could try quercetin a natural antihistamine. I found taking a low dose 3 days a week knocked my winter hives on the head. Even a tiny dose of Cetirizine made me very sleepy.

The flu jab brought on my itching and hives. I didn't realise until the following year when I had another flu jab. I am on 30mg Edoxaban and 1.25 Bisopropol. I don't think either of them have made it worse. When it gets too much I just take 1/3 of a cetirizine hydrochloride pill in the evening and that keeps the itching at bay for several days - a wonderful relief. I also sleep well the first night which is a bonus for me. I think having reduced the tablet to just 1/3 I don't suffer very much with tiredness the next day. I Hope this helps.
