AF happens ,. NO reason needed.

As Bob said, there’s no rhyme or reason sometimes why AF starts and we can all try pulling our hair out, trying to work it out. You might need to possibly looking at making some lifestyle changes now to try and limit episodes, as many find certain foods a trigger, alcohol, caffeine and food additives.

So did the hospital put you on lots of tablets just for the afib?

Hi Jarvo977,

Unfortunately in the 180s can be quite common for Afib ( mine has gone that high) some go higher and some go lower. But what pills have they put you on for it? You mention 10 and that seems a lot if you are newly diagnosed? Are they all for Afib?

7 of them are

Best to discuss with your heart specialists, as thyroid issues can be linked to AFib. I would imagine that your health plan would include stabilizing your thyroid to determine if this could be causing AFib. Again discuss your treatment plan with specialists and understand what pills you are taking and why. Keep safe

it is quite likely that your AF is connected to thyroid issues and you need urgently to get blood tests to see what your current levels are. Did they do a blood test in the hospital? They should have done that immediately but sadly thyroid issues are poorly managed all over the UK. Ask for results or ask for a full blood test for T4, T3 and TSH, and you must get the reference ranges. Then go to the thyroid site here for advice. If your thyroid levels are too low or too high, this will affect your entire body, including your heart.

On initial AF diagnosis, most people assume there is one cause and thyroid can be a factor but not necessarily the whole story.

My personal theory is that in the majority of cases there are a number of factors which all contribute to 'tipping the scales' into AF. One exception would be extreme athletes where over training may be the only cause.

I would therefore take advice from a trusted medic on your thyroid and make a host of Lifestyle changes as frequently discussed on this forum.

You say you are on 10 tablets a day, so I suspect you have more than Lone PAF and other chronic issues may be causation factors.

I believe in monitoring and studying each Afib episode to see whether one can identify possible related activities and behaviors. You may or may not find any answers, so don't obsess or stress about it, just be observant.

I had to work out all of the steps needed to stop my Afib episodes myself and now rarely have one after having 12-24 hour long events every 10 days-2 weeks a year ago. I always know why it happens and can be more careful.

Most Afib sufferers do not really know what triggers their episodes, it seems. I am fortunate.

Best of luck for getting some relief,

Fibnum

Hi again

But you are missing the point that you had a thyroid procedure to rescue your thyroid problem.

It pointed to your thyroid being the organ causing your AF.

I'm sorry, I think you have me confused with someone else. I had no thyroid problem or procedure.

Hi Javco

Your name reminds me of my JAVA born in UK Devon off spring of my mini schnauzer. Lovely names!

BobD doesn't respect that hypo and hyper thyroid are on the medical list that cause AF. My thyroid was haywire due to thyroid cancer. Folks who don't have thyroid problems do not accept this phononomen happening.

So it is very possible that your AF was caused by your thyroid problems. But lucky you as you didn't have a stroke due to AF and it has been diagnosed. I hope that you are on an anti-co.agulant.

The stroke MRI showed a clot damage i my left frontal lobe.

It could be more than one thing like high BP or and worrying which I was and it came after a trip to Russia on a 12 day cruise where I contacted a horrid flu in 2019. Plus denied an operation to take Johnson & Johnson horrid mesh by our ACC. But March 2020 I had it removed as proof of damage showed physically and 3D scan.

10 pills. What are these for what?

I now have no thyroid so i am easily stable at the amount of thyroxin SYTHROID I take daily. 125mg for my weight 86 kg and still losing weight. Occasionally I take only 100mg. Synthroid come in 25mg, 50mg, 100mg & 200mg. It is realiable with expiry date, kiddie-lock and sealed when you get it with anti- condensation capsule inside.

Remember the rules around taking your synthetic med. You know the thyroid very important aids every process in your body like digestion, elimination, etc. I remember to take mine early 5.6 or 7am, then no food 1 hour. Unfortunately CCB Diltiazem is better to also have no food so further 1/2 hour till b/fast. No milk, iron for 4 hours. Otherwise diet without soy, water without chlorine or fluoride.

I found licorice changes the absorption.

Keep your B12 700-800 level if over 65 or 500.

The surgeon guides me regarding my TSH. I keep it around 1.5-2.5 TSH. Its auto with total T4 to keep level. I'm at the top of normal. T3 is 3.9-4.0 Normal.

Heart meds are a balancing act to control your AF. I was rapid, persistent. Now I am now controlled but 100% AF. H/Rate at night is always slow at avg 47 regardless of meds. 2 meds CCB Diltiazem AM for H/Rate day. BB Bisoprolol PM for BP.

Make sure that your Dr and Cardiology are interested in you and your AF.

You should be under 2 specialists, Endocrinology for thyroid and Cardiologist for your Heart.

Keep safe.

Hi

At 1 year 5 monthsBB only with no energy and Metoprolol avg 186bpm.DAY

pauses at night, sweating, fatigued.

Hospital Cardiologist cause I asked for .. changed to Bisoprolol avge 156bpm DAY. Wrote as Bisoprolol raised and raised to 10mg and little change in H/R Day.

Private Cardiologist changed meds.

Diltiazem 180 (1/2 dose) but too high - lightheaded at 51bpm.

REDUCED to 120mg Diltiazem. AM

REDUCED to 2.5mg Bisoprolol PM

The first year it was controlled at 88-96H/R Day but I had an operation in March 2022 within 4 months of starting CCB Diltiazem and told if I was over 100bpm Anaesthetist said we won't do op. (removal TVT KiT Sling & Mesh Johnson & Johnson damage case.)

But by November 2022 I had lost 3kg. Then another 3kg over 2023 and h/r is now 60s Day avge. More energy, less fatigued and walking longer with less stopping.

I was diagnosed with stroke September with AF 6 weeks after bad flu in Russian River Cruise - 2 Australians brought it with them. I blame air conditioning.

4 days in hospital whilst having a carotid arteries scan , a shadow over thyroid showed up which was investigated. Papillary Cancer.

CCB Diltiazem needs monitoring carefully. I recommend to start lower. My report said that I could up to 360mg Diltiazem.

What is strange is that my 47avg H/R Night stays at that level. Always had cold shoulders at night!

I try to have Diltiazem by 7am after waiting an hour after my thyroid thyroxin pills, no food.

Hope this helps .. Joy. 74. (NZ)

I am learning, anything that upsets the balance of our bodies, in other words we have several systems that all work in harmony. Any of those systems get out of balance will trigger a stress response on other systems. Many of us react to stress, well we a stress ourselves by too much exercise and not enough good wholesome food to balance out what the body needs. It's the liver and the brain that work together on that issue. If your thyroid is acting up of course it will trigger responses like Afib.

We have all falsely been lead to believe that calories in calories out will help us loos weight. Eat the right foods and weight will balance out. For me I was attempting to loose that last 5 pounds and it was causing increasing cortisol production. Another big no no is PUFA's Poly Unsaturated Fats. They destroy everything in our delicate system. Causing the body to rust from the inside out. It wasn't since the industrial revolution that we were gradually told to eat the wrong kinds of fats. I could on, put I think you get the picture.

I added a little more carbs, good ones, to my diet and my body loves it because I havn't had an episode in months. Plus I have more energy to handle outside stressors. Which I have had plenty in the last few days. I even said to my husband I am totally surprised I didn't go into Afib. Experimenting in myself I see I am on the right track. You have to be your own detective when it comes to health. That is my story and I am sticking with it.
