having cervicogenic headaches from arthritis in neck. Any painkillers better than paracetamol that we can safely take? Thanks again.

why no Ibuprofen? I was just going to ask what to take as am experiencing pain at base of neck into part of shoulders?

Ibuprofen ike all NSAIDS is contra indicated if you have AF as it is known as a cause of AF. It can also interfere with anticoagulation though in my view that is secondary.

Sorry - what is AF?

I was advised in hospital to be wary of Codeine. Can become addictive

Most strong painkillers can which is why I only ever use thenm occasionally if I have something I really really have to do.

I have been prescribed Co-Codamol more than once by GP and hospital (post op).

Am in permanent AF and take Edoxaban.

Co-Codamol makes me throw up big time unfortunately.

I just rely on my brain to produce pain killers now as every pain killer seems to affect my stomach. Even Paracetamol.

The only things I can take are Pineapple juice and vegetables which are natural pain reducers. I do take Tumeric on my vegetables as well.

All the best.

I would go to a recommended chiropractor or osteopath for your headaches rather than suggesting a drug to you.

I had an Osteopath who seemed able to work miracles on my body. So I agree with that wholeheartedly.

All the best.

GP has told me it's fine to use anti inflammatory gels and ointments on the skin although they don't help that much. When I suffered unbearable pain up the back of my head from two herniated cervical discs I found sleeping in a soft collar helped tremendously.

The best thing for my arthritis neck pain has been physical therapy. I also take one Excedrin and a very low dose of Xanax on bad days which helps me tremendously. As I’m on eliquis I know not to take anything with aspirin in it but I have to do what works for me. Also heating a beanbag neck collar and applying helps. I’ve used Salon Pas in the past which can help. That kind of neck pain can be difficult. Good luck.

It sounds as if you have the wear-and-tear type of arthritis in your neck, - what a doctor would call cervical spondylitis (if inflamed) or spondylosis (if not inflamed). Symptoms of that would include feeling and hearing things grinding inside, when you move your head? My suggestion would be to take a very low dose of the anti-inflammatory called Colchicine, no more than one tablet of 250 micrograms (equals 0.25 milligrams) per day.

I was prescribed Gabapentin by my GP.

americanmigrainefoundation..... Hopefully I’m not teaching you to suck eggs! I have this condition too, nightmare. Not keen on yet MORE pills. I try arnica gel and being a Biomagnetic therapist, use my powerful magnetic wand, which helps. I also have T2D, so taking more pills I’m not keen on.

I suggest you go to your GP, there can be various contra-indications of one sort or another. I have degenerated neck discs and I am getting horrible head and neck pain, loath to take any ‘pain killers’ due to compatibility and yet more drugs going through my liver and kidneys! So, yes, I have finally got appt with GP Thursday for all my ails 🤦‍♀️

I also use accu-pressure points under the occipital points, feel sharp and sore to start with. Self head massage too.

Hi, I have chronic arthritis, especially painful at night and NSAIDs area trigger for my AF, so asked GP and he prescribed codeine/paracetamol mix called zapain. I find it works and allows me to sleep. Physio may also help

An ice pack on the back of the neck worked for me. You can designate something like a bag of frozen peas (mark the bag with an X so you don’t end up eating them!) and wrap in a tea towel. It helps reduce the inflammation in the joints. I also used codeine + paracetamol tablets when the pain was unbearable. There is a warning on the packet that advises you not to use for longer than three days, so take heed. I found the pain settled down before. The ice pack/cooling pad idea is my go-to. It’s easy and there’s very little cost.
