Cutting down on Omeprazole with AFIB?

After discussion with Pharmacist I decided to cut down on Omeprazole. After just missing 1 dose,i.e. 24 hours instead of 12 I started to experience palps & My Kardia equivalent showed Arrythmia.I expected acid problems but not that .I am 8 months post ablation and don't want to rock the boat .I do think that AFib could have been somewhat Vagal.I am going to try to chase up 6 months follow up with EP before trying again.

What do others think?

That it is very difficult to come off PPI’s as you will suffer from acid rebound which could be the trigger for AF so doesn’t matter how long you leave it reducing PPI’s is very, very difficult.

You may find this article and discussion useful:- Steps to take when weaning off PPI’s

Was recently in your position. I wanted to get off of PPI's, but waited until I was six months post ablation to try.

Took me three weeks of weaning to get by the "rebound" phase, but I still have daily reflux.

Not surprising, because there was a reason I had to take PPI's in the first place :) Fortunately, it has not triggered my afib, which it shouldn't if your PVI was successful.

I think it's worth trying to get off of PPI's for many reasons, but some people may need them. As much as I dislike the idea, I may have to go back on them at some point.

You're on a lower dose than I was, so maybe your reflux was not as bad and hopefully proper weaning will get you through the rebound stage and diet/lifestyle modifications with maybe a little help from H2 pumps and antacids will keep you off them altogether.

Thanks for the replyMy reflux was pretty bad and had to fight to stay on 2 x20mg.Taken 1 morning & 1 evening

It is easy to say my reflux is not bad at the moment as the Ppis are working.

I think I will wait until my bloods retest in a few weeks. My ALT levels just a little high at 42.

I also want to talk to EP about reducing Diliatezem.

I have recently reduced my lanzaprole from 30 mg a day for many years down to 15 mg. Did it very very slowly with GPS help. Alternated 30/15 every other day for 2 months then 2 days 15 1 day 30 for another month. Now just take 15 mg a day . I may reduce to nothing in future but right now don’t want to tempt gastric/AF problems. X

I cut out lanzaprosole having been on it for years and it seem to have helped my AF do get a bit of heartburn now and again

hi. I have a small hiatus hernia but started taking omeprazole originally to protect my stomach from naproxen. I was put on 40mg a day and this wasn’t reviewed for years, even after I stopped taking naproxen and didn’t know about the hernia. I tapered down to 20mg about a year ago and then about 6 weeks ago I made the decision to stop it completely. I cut down to 10mg a day for a couple of weeks then 1 every couple of days for another 2 weeks then 1 every few days for a couple of weeks. I used rennie and acidex as a bridging treatment. I did have reflux which is not surprising with an hernia and I found coffee was my trigger. I’m now off omeprazole and hardly ever use rennie. While I still get some heartburn from coffee it doesn’t last long and I now mainly drink decaf which helps. I’m reluctant to give up my coffee but I’ve cut down. I had no palpitations and my atrial flutter didn’t return. It’s uncomfortable to come off omeprazole but tapering seemed to help. Good luck.

Why are you trying to quit using Omeprazole? I know there are some writing on the web suggesting that it is harmful to use long term, but I have been taking it for years w/o problems. I have discussed it with my gastroenterologist, and he believes the negative information on Omeprazole is overblown. His advice to me is continue taking it, and I do.

I had Afibs for several years, but that was corrected with an ablation a few years ago, and I have not had an Afib event since then. I don't recall Omeprazole or acid reflex initiating or being a factor in any of my Afib events.

I had a liver test showing ALT above normal levels. I believe Omeprazole can damage the liver.
