Beta blockers like Metoprolol tend to cause unwanted side effects in many people.

Personally, I can only tolerate very low doses, so I was switched to a calcium channel blocker, called Diltiazem. Diltiazem basically does the same thing in many cases, however with less side effects for many.

Unfortunately, beta blockers tend to be prescribed for abib, often regarless if rate control is needed or not. I did very well for 40 years with a fib only using rate control drugs like Metoprolol and Diltiazem when my heart rate was fast.

Sometimes less is better.

Hi

Yes, yes, yes.

I said no to it after stroke but I was given it (3x24.75).

Breathless, fatigue and exertion - no energy. Had to sleep.

The 24-hr Heart Monitor showed pauses during night anf H/R during Day avge 187!

I was changed to Bisoprolol another BB. Still not controlled at 156.

Went to private H/Specialist who put me on Diltiazem 180mg - too much, reduced to 120mg. Controlled well.

Now I have Diltriazem 120mg AM for H/R (only lasts 12 hours)

Bisoprolol 2.5mg PM. for BP

110-130. / 69. and 60s H/R Day. Always 47 avge Night

Metaprolol was terrible for me. Nausea, extreme fatigue. Switched to carvedilol. Side effects almost as bad but lowering dosage to 1/4 origudosage has helped a lot. HR control an issue at times but dealing. Good luck. Sometimes it’s an issue of trial and error with meds. Can be scary.

I have taken Metoprolol for 2 years with minimum side effects with the exception of fatigue and mild breathlessness. However, the breathlessness could well be due to persistent afib. It does a good job of controlling my heart rate.

If you are just starting Metoprolol, the side effects will normally lessen over time as your body/mind adjusts. You may want to google a comparison of Metoprolol/Diltiazem to compare possible side effects. Note Dilitiazem may cause fluid retention which can be alleviated by taking a diuretic.

Beta blockers and other medications are prescribed on an invdividual basis based on the patient's symptoms and heart evaluation. Side effects may vary. Best to you !

Yup. I just started about a week ago. First 3 days, I was not myself! Severe fatigue, rage/anger, difficulty breathing etc. The anger and fatigue lasted 3 days. Now, I’m ok and back to my normal self. My heart tried to race and afib yesterday, but I guess the Metoprolol got a hold of it super quick! In saying that, I was SO worried to fall asleep lastnight because of how low my heartrate became. I struggled to breathe lastnight. That’s probably the only negative side effect I have left from Metoprolol. I take it after developing (PoTS) after a traumatic birthing experience, plus severe preeclampsia. I also take it to stop the sudden, almost fatal, high blood pressure spikes that come on randomly. Drs have no idea what’s going on with me, so if anyone may have a clue, pls let me know.
