Heart rate up and down

my husband is currently waiting for an appointment with the arrhythmia clinic after suffering a stroke 3 months ago . As I’ve mentioned before he had an ablation in 2017 which had obviously stopped working at some point . Just curious as to whether anyone else s heart rate varies so much . He can go , for example today, from 50 up to 111 today .

Regards

Jackie

So sorry to hear about your husband’s stroke. To answer your question about variable HR - yes - it is the nature of the condition to have very variable BP and HR.

Ablations don’t ‘stop working’ - our hearts find other ways for the rogue signals to get through. I’ve had 2 ablations and now like Rosie have a pacemaker - which does reduce the symptoms experienced with AF but the AF will continue to exist. Maybe discuss options with the cardiologist?

PS. My variations could be much wider before my pacemaker which has stabilised things and improved QOL.

A variation in heart rate occurs while AF is happening but from your letter you seem to mean that your hubby's heart rate varies even when he is not having AF? I used to get this a lot, too, with a variation from maybe 50bpm to 130bpm or so, for no apparent reason. For reasons unknown, these days, my rate is less variable, although I am now taking a daily bisoprolol tablet (1.25mg).

Yes he s on biso also 10mg a day and is permanent or persistent AF not sure which yet until we get an appointment with arrhythmia clinic . He had a stroke three months ago because of his AF.

Hi Jackie. I do hope he’s recovering well. Was your husband taking an anticoagulant (blood thinner) when he had his stroke?

The high dose of bisoprolol was what I took once but it still failed to help my high heart rate. Digoxin finally got it down.

An elderly friend has had permanent AF for very many years but his rate is fairly normal and he has no symptoms. He’s lucky.

Hi .

He was on digoxin but didn’t agree with him. Caused really bad diarrhoea He wasn’t put on blood thinners after his ablation but is on them post stroke .

That's a shame that he wasn't on them after the ablation. The doctors calculate the need for them by various means. I was mid 60s when I had my first AF and was put straight on them owing to my age.

~I'm sorry that your husband's a/f has appeared again contributing to his stroke.

CDreamer has articulated the situation well as have other members with their experiences.

My Cardiologist did say that my faulty genetic electrical signals will find another way to appear if I had ablation.

He was correct & PVI ablation lasted 3 months/thereabouts as I was still in blanking period.

My H/R + BP continues with its highs and lows - pace & ablate is next option suggested but told it won't prevent the a/fib.

I take Metroprolol 47.5mg, Losarten 25mg, b/thinner.

Wishing your husband well - with you in spirit~
