Digoxin, upset stomach

Jackiesmith7777 profile image

My husband has been on digoxin for three weeks and has had to come off them for 7 days to see if that’s what has been causing lots of unwanted trips to the toilet for last two weeks . They have upped his bisoprolol from 7.25 to 10mg a day to see if they can eliminate the cause for 7days . I’m worried his heart rate will go back up but he can’t live with everything he eats going straight through him . Anyone else had this problem ? That's if it is digoxin , his other tabs are edoxoban , antorvaststin , one for protecting kidneys and another for stomach . Thanks

Yes I think if it persists that will be the next tablet to change

My husband has been put on digoxin as well snd he too keeps getting an upset tummy. He had it one day when he had only eaten one sandwich. I didn’t think of it being the pill. I must look st the instructions

I hope your hubby gets better soon

Is he still on it ? How long has he had an upset stomach ? He s getting quite down about it as he already has the symptoms from his stroke to contend with as well as his persistent AF , they are heading towards another ablation , will be his 2nd one , but this time I’m going to say I don’t want him to have one if he isn’t going to be on thinners afterwards , as he had gone into AF again which caused his stroke

Trevor is still persevering with the digoxin as we are not absolutely sure it is those giving him his upset tummy. He is on another new pill called dapagliflozin and after reading your post this morning I did wonder if it could have been that or the digoxin as it has a lot of side effects

I’m amazed that if your husband has AF that he isn’t on an anticoagulant anyway unless I wonder if the stroke was caused by a bleed rather than a clot

Your poor hubby I am so sorry he has had a lot to contend with hasn't he. Please know I wish you both well

Yes hence why I’m awake , he s been again at 1.30 am he is also on dapagliflozin . He is on blood thinners now when it’s too late . We have to wait 7 days or 2 if his heart rate goes up . They’ve upped his beta blockers to 10mg from 7.25 mg to co or date for the digoxin . So not sure which one they will eliminate next if this doesn’t work . He s taking dylorite for his electrolyte s . He s had this for nearly a month . His appetite is fine and feels ok in himself Jist getting fed up with it all I think unsurprisingly . He was coping well with the stroke etc before this .

Sorry I meant to say he’s on lansoprazole for his stomach

google lansoprazole - it can cause more digestive problems than it solves! I had to stop taking it as it caused havoc with my system. I think it's fine for most people but then there's the rest of us!

I asked trevor this morning how he was re the upsets and he said “weeelll ok-ish “ but I still think it’s a combination of the digoxin and dapagliflozin” but when did I qualify as a doctor.

Did you know that dapagliflozin was first experimented/created for diabetes, but it was discovered that it helped the heart. It is a new drug

I do hope your husband gets better. It is do debilitating to have to constantly use the bathroom without all his other problems

Thank you , I will keep you posted if we have any improvement coming off if the digoxin . I’m also wondering if the Lansoprazole had anything to do with it for stomach ulcers and reflux , neither which he has . I know it’s used as a preventative but am wondering if taking that on an empty stomach and can’t eat for 30mins/hour after taking it .

Yes trevor is on lansaprazole and so am I but it is to protect the tummy from getting raw from the pills. Probably wrong but we just take ours with breakfast and all our other pills. No muesli or granola, either porridge or toast unless you’re very good at cooking proper full breakfast.

Trevor has been taking lansoprazole for about 50 years (me from about 1990s) when he had an ulcer and hasn’t done him any harm but I do read on here that it should only be taken for a short time

Thank you for replying . Yes it says on the packet to take 60 minutes before food but I have a feeling it might be the Lansoprazole rather than the digoxin or maybe a mixture of both . We ve started from today having the tablets with food as I’m hoping this will line the stomach more . I’ll keep you posted how it goes

Yes do try that. I have been in hospital for the last two weeks and they gave me all my pills at once even the lansoprazole

One time they did give me my levythyroxine before breakfast

Back to 130am and 5.30am 💩 I’m Wondering now if it’s the Atorvastatin he takes about 8.30 as well . I’m going to give it to him later in the evening to see if he goes later than 1.30 . It’s like detective work trying to find out what it is . His appetite is still healthy . He s well in himself as he did 6000 steps yesterday for the first time in ten weeks . And there’s no bleeding . So frustrating

Oh dear I’m sorry and you were so pleased he had gone 9 hours the other day

I do hope things improve (so do you and he) it must be so debilitating

Could it be IBS?

I was thinking that as he wasn’t exactly normal before as not solid lol soz too much info so maybe . He is going ok through the day again so far so I’m thinking maybe it is the digoxin and also the statin thst he takes at night , hence going early hours so like I said I’m going to leave off the statin for tonight and see what happens . He hasn’t even got high cholesterol . He wasn’t on them before his stroke so maybe it’s Jist as a precaution . Thanks for replying he last went at 7.45. So seven hours so far 🤞🤞

What’s the medication for his stomach? Not a PPI I hope…..

Jackiesmith7777 profile image

What’s a PPI? Lansoprazole

Buffafly profile image
Buffafly in reply toJackiesmith7777

That is one, when I took it I developed diarrhoea, couldn’t go out in the morning, was told to stop immediately but the diarrhoea carried on because I had then got a bowel infection. Had a week in hospital and nearly had to have a section of bowel removed. Even though he may have been taking it for a while it could still have allowed bad bugs to flourish. If stopping digoxin doesn’t help I’d try stopping Lansaprazole.

Jackiesmith7777 in reply toBuffafly

Yes also I don’t understand why they havnt pin pointed the Lansoprazole as the problem , considering it is to do with the stomach ??

Buffafly profile image
Buffafly in reply toJackiesmith7777

I am surprised too but maybe if he’s taken it for some time they think it’s ok, but your body can change and also other drugs can affect response. I was prescribed it after my ablation which is standard practice because the oesophagus can get a bit singed during the procedure and reflux can exacerbate any damage. But as soon as I spoke to the AF nurse she told me to stop it immediately.

I agree and identify with your post Buffafly. I had the same issues with Lansaprazole

yes this morning I gave it to him with food rather than an empty stomach as I kept thinking it must be the stomach one so I’m trying both at the moment as he s so fed up at the moment .

I had a similar problem when I was on Digoxin. I was on a lot of medication for another health issue and when I checked out the ‘what not to take with these tablets’ details in all my meds, I should not have been taking them which had not been identified by two Consultants (one for AFib and one for a form of Leaukaemia. I came off them and problem solved.

You could also run it by your Pharmacist - they are usually quite up to date with such things.

Yes I did today thank you and he s recommend he take loperamide two tabs in the morning and one after every visit for two days if it doesn’t clear up we ll ring the doctors ….again!! Thanks for replying . He’s getting so fed up , he was coping well with the stroke and being in AF again but this is really getting him down now
