Stopping sotalol48 hours before ablation

I just wanted to say that I think it’s normal to feel worried; we’re told to take these medications to help our hearts to do their job better and in turn hopefully make us feel better so whenever you’re asked to stop taking them again, it’s only natural that it will cause some worry.

All I can say is that if the professionals treating you have asked you to temporarily or completely stop taking this medicine then you need to try and put your faith in them and listen to the advice. It might be beneficial to have a chat with them when you see them to understand the why behind their request in more detail?

Knowledge is power and if you’re adequately informed then this might build your confidence in the process?

Lastly, I wanted to wish you well for your ablation; I don’t have any personal experience of this procedure but I know there are many others here that do and I’m sure you’ll be in good company. There seems to be a huge well of knowledge and I believe that I read previously that there are some guides about ablation available too.

I put the same comment on here a few days ago, as I’m having an ablation in September and I’ve been told to stop the Sotalol and it’s worrying me too. I’ve googled this and it’s should be ok for 2 days as it takes 4 days to go out of your body apparently. It’s to do with being able to induce the AFib when they do the ablation.

I have been in a similar situation with a different drug and for quite different surgical reasons.

Its not a problem, trust me !

I had to stop Warfarin for 6 days before knee replacement surgery ( where I was on the slab under the knife for some 3 hours ). So when I went under the knife my blood was as close to normal as it could be. When I was back in my room and had 'come round' the nursing staff administered two injections of Fragmin ( a bridging anticoagulant ) and I returned to Warfarin that same evening. No problems at all.

Don't worry and trust your surgical team ... they do know best. They will not put you in harms way.

I was instructed to continue with my 40mg Sotalol and Apixaban even on the morning of my ablation. I was allowed a sip of water to swallow the tablets.

I was asked on 2 separate occasions to confirm that I had taken my Apixaban for the 30 days prior to my ablation.

I obeyed my instructions and all went well.

Years ago I had to stop sotalol before an ablation they wanted to get the full effect of the arrhythmia during the ablation they told me. I admit I felt awful but I got through it.

I didn’t question them I just did what they said because I knew my EP wouldn’t put me in danger.

Mine was so bad that actually sotalol wasn’t controlling it. It was strange at first I felt better then my heart started going like an express train and I couldn’t sleep but I knew that’s what was needed.

You can go home after the procedure and have a good rest. All the best.
