Adizem/Flecainide Side Effects

I take 50 mg Flecainide am and pm and am taking Adizem 120 slow release in the evening. Does anyone else have a problem with increased need to visit the loo in the evening or night time? From about 6 pm in the evening I'm frequently going to the toilet, I go before I go to bed, then by midnight(ish) I feel the need again and once or twice more during the night. During the rest of the day I don't have the problem! Input from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

Could have other causes, but nocturia (frequent night time urination) is associated with calcium channel blockers like Adizem.

I just recently stopped Adizem and have noticed that the frequency of my nighttime urination has decreased. That said, I still prefer Adizem over beta blockers, which have their own set of side effects.

Thanks Jim. All seems to tie up. May I ask what time of day you took Adizem? I’m thinking maybe it’s better to take it in the morning? I have to say that my PAF has been much better since taking this combo! Are you well enough not to have to take it any more? Penny

I always took the fast acting tabs. Either twice a day -- 8am and 8 pm or sometimes 4x/day 8am, 4pm, 8pm, 4am

Just had an ablation, so protocol was to stop Adizem and Flec after a month. Hopefully, I won't need them again, but they kept me out of afib for a year.

I hope, too, you don't need any meds again. I'm pretty sure now my trips to the loo are, indeed, linked to Adizem. Hey ho, if it's not one thing! Keep well. Penny

Hi. I have just joined this site and so glad I did. It has helped me enormously after just having a diagnosis of AF and feeling like it was the end of the world. Having just read your post (I’m glad I did) I’ve realised that my nocturnal visits to the loo are down to my Adizem. I wondered why I’m visiting the loo 2 to 3 times during the night. I take my Adizem first thing in the morning so I don’t think that changing your habit of taking them at night will alter the fact that you still need to visit the loo throughout the night.

Night loo visits can also be a side effect of AF especially if you have a low degree of heart failure. It’s worth mentioning to your GP. If your ankles swell (also unfortunately a side effect of diltiazem) it is a good idea to ask for support stockings if you can bear them ❤️‍🩹

Buffafly, thank you. I don’t have swollen ankles but obviously as you point out, my nightly visits to the loo could be a side effect of heart failure and not my Adizem. I just thought it a coincidence that PAP48 experienced nightly visits to the loo and is taking Adizem medication too. I’ll speak to my consultant when I see him next. Thanks again. ❤️

I think you're right ElizabethBee. I'll keep taking Adizem at night as recommended. The loo trips are a small price to pay, I think, for keep the Afib at bay, at least for the time being. Keep well and thank you for replying. x

No experience with Adizem but been on 200mgs Flecainide for years.

I also have had nocturia for years, usually twice a night, sometimes 4 or 5, the latter I think due to what I have for my last meal at 5pm; meat seems to generate more nocturia in my case. Still testing different meal choices. It's also possible it could be caused by anxiety from poor breathing whilst asleep due to a frequently part blocked left sinus/nostril or dreams. I say this because during the day anxiety has that effect. In reality it may be a mix of reasons.

Thank you for replying secondtry. Interesting you say about anxiety from poor breathing, I also have bronchiectasis and asthma so sometimes my breathing is worse than others. Last night, actually, was a good night for me, only one extra trip! Keep well.

I am taking virtually the same and try not to drink much in the evening, making up for it next morning. But I was dashing to the loo 2 and three times a night until I was prescribed an oestrogen replacement and the problem is much easier - would that help?

Hi Bassets - did your GP prescribe the oestrogen replacement and was it specifically to treat this particular problem? I have an appointment with my GP on Monday, I'll discuss it with her. Keep well.

It was sometime ago and yes she did prescribe oestrogen pessaries for that problem. Oddly enough I have started on it again and sleep like a log .

HI. I take 300mg Diltiazem daily at 11.00am and 100mg Flecainide as a pill in the pocket. I am due to have an ablation next month after 10 years of paroxysmal AF which is becoming more frequent. I have to get up for the loo at least twice during the night normally but when I have an episode of AF, I need to pee every half hour, sometimes up to 6 or 7 times in the hour or two it takes before the Flecainide kicks in and puts me back into sinus rhythm.

Thank you for replying lizzieloo2 - I know exactly what you mean about the toilet problem when in AF! Every half hour until I get back into sinus rhythm. Good luck with your ablation and hope it sorts you AF out. Take care.
