accord Flecainide

hi

I’m desperate to get hold of Accord Flecainide 100mg. Once Lloyds shut in Sainsburys it was kind trying to source a hidden treasure!! The pharmacies just can’t seem to get it. Even though Accord themselves told me who uses Alliance wholesaler. Namely Asda and Boots.

but they keep saying they are ordering it and another brand comes in.

my little reserve supply is dwindling and I am getting seriously anxious. I’m sensitive to the additives and don’t know who to go to next.

I know you probably can’t help, but if by chance you know of a Pharmacy that regularly can get Accord, please let me know. I mean a chain that seems to be able to get it.

accord Flecainide has been difficult to source for some time.

I have changed to generic Flecainide without problems.

Before you run out ask your doctor for a prescription for generic and try it.

I would only use Accord Flecainide when I was on it. Such a nuisance all these shortages.

My local chemist is Paydens in Kent, paydens.com.Occasionally I get generic but in the main they are Accord.

I hope this helps.

Best wishes

like Jean I would only use Accord Flecainide but can tolerate Teva as a second best for a while if needs be. I am lucky that my local pharmacy (which only has 8 branches all told) go out of their way to get the brand I prefer and if they can’t get it then I know it is a general issue.

They all say they request it, but the suppliers don't send it. Despite their lists saying it is available. Alliance are supposed to have it. Other suppliers say not available. Every time Boots request it they send an alternative. I always check in the shop, but my husband collected this time and didn’t. I knew by the size of the box straight away it was wrong. But as you say. It’s a bust if you take it out of the shop. 🤦‍♀️

Hi there, I now also have the same problem sourcing accord. I have it specified on my prescription that it has to be accord but for last 3 months Boots through Alliance get a generic sent to them even after requesting Accord. No one at Boots has yet managed to tell me the reason for the shortage.

And me- apparently, it’s down to the suppliers of the pharmacies who just go for the cheapest!

I asked my local Boots pharmacy yesterday about getting the Accord brand of Flecainide, but they said they can’t get it at the moment. Since reading a recent thread on here, I’m questioning whether the sudden worsening of my AF symptoms this year might have something to do with the alternative brand I’ve been supplied with by my local chemist (Jardines). Before reading about it on here, I had no idea that different brands of a drug could affect people differently.

In any case, the one I’m currently getting (Tillomed) tastes absolutely vile - really bitter - it seems to have no protective coating on it. I feel like my poor cat must have felt when I tried to get the worming tablet down him and he would inevitably spit it out!

I definitely used to get the Accord brand from Asda. Does Accord come under any other names? Or are there any other brands people can recommend please?

My Levothyroxine tablets used to be Accord. They now come under the name of Almus, but the foil strips inside the pack still say Accord. I think Almus took over Accord.

thanks Jean, that’s really helpful

Carew profile image
Carew in reply to jeanjeannie50

Almus is just a glorified packager/distributor.

Almus is part of the Boots group and they get other companies to pack under the Almus name. But the product is still Accord (or whatever).

But sometimes Almus switch supplier. So always check the PL number on the pack.

Vonnegut profile image
Vonnegut in reply to jeanjeannie50

iI found Accord and Almus were ok too but the others aren’t and it seems many of us have the same experience. Didn’t there used to be regulators?!

Gilli54 profile image
Gilli54 in reply to Vonnegut

Almus. Don’t think I’ve seen that brand of flecainide. I have for other meds. I’ll ask about it.

I may have misremembered as it’s a while since I had them near the start of my AF journey. Certainly not keen on the ones I have now because of the constipation and extra fatigue that comes as “common side effects” it’s made by Brown & Burk though many of them come with those side effects- I can’t believe it’s from the important active ingredient but from the added stuff. The current ones start do not seem to be made properly as they start coming apart before you can swallow them!

Asda told me they could get it. Tried for two weeks and couldn’t. Then put my prescription back on the spine. 🤷‍♀️

I am taking the generic brands. What's better with accord?

jeanjeannie50 profile image

I took Flecainide for many years i found that with brands other than Accord I was having breakthroughs of AF.

Gilli54 profile image
Gilli54 in reply to Drounding

just some of the additives in tablets upset different people. If you find one that suits a combination of tablets you might take it’s good to stick with them. Teva levothyroxine for example, suits many but causes serious problems for some. I can’t take it without really horrible gastric issues.

Hi Gilli

I had this with Boots, a while ago they sent a generic and my reflux symptoms went so bad that all the pills I took seemed to be sticking in my throat. I had what felt like a blockage of gas in my gullet that seemed to take forever to get rid of. A really horrible feeling. I was drinking loads of water trying to get the wretched pills down.

I stopped taking them after a fortnight and because I was ahead with my Persciptions I was able to use my spares of Almus ( made by accord and the one I was used to ) that I kept back for pill in pocket.

I reordered from boots and asked them to put a note on my account never to give me them again. After that I would always check in the shop before I took them out as if you give them straight back they can reuse them, if you leave with them they have to be destroyed. All fine till about eight months ago.

I was given the generic and gave it back and they got me accord. Such a relief.

The month after they could not get it they just sent the same bad one over and over and I had to accept them, I felt frantic.

I even rang a local independent pharmacist and asked if he could get me Accord he said he would be lying if he said he could! That since it all went electronic they just ignore such instructions and send whatever they have.

I thanked him for the info and gave up.

I started taking them by having an accord in the morning and the gen in the evening and took my largest pills in the morning with the accord. I was lucky to be able to do this. I had a bit of bad reflux but not as bad as before. When I got to only a few strips of accord left I started taking them full time and honestly I have not been too bad.

I also took omeprazole as I started the generic but can only take them for so long as they give me bad stomach symptoms after a while. My reflux has also improved a huge amount after I started only having decaf tea and coffee, a tip I learned from here.

I have heard on a thread on here that there has been a shortage of accord that was supposed to be fixed in July and was hopeful that the Persciption I got last week would be accord but no, still the generic. I don’t feel up to arguing with boots anymore about it, it made me miserable last time. If the awful symptoms had kept up I don’t what I would have done.

The generic doesn’t seem to keep me out of afib as well as the accord did, I have a lot more breakthroughs but that might just be progression anyway.

I still have a three strips of accord left for pips, I really don’t want to take extra of the generic. I’m glad I’m only on 50mg twice a day, don’t know if I could have coped with the generic on a bigger dose.

Sorry for the essay but wanted to let you know how it’s been in my experience and what I’ve learned. Hope you manage to get some accord, if you do tell us how you did it. I’m going to try asking boots again next month.

Best wishes

VC

That’s so interesting, VC. I’ve just read somewhere else that Accord own Almus and Actavis. Seems you have to be a detective in this game!

thank you for such a long reply. Your experience mirrors my own in the difficulty getting that brand of Accord. I too have horrible digestive issues if I change up my tablets. They all work just fine together at the moment. I started on Tambocor but they don't seem to be available now to go back to. So who knows what is going on?

I’m glad you have found a temporary solution that is working for you.

Let’s hope it improves. When I rang Accord themselves, they said tgere was no reason for there to be a problem. So you have to wonder if it is down to price in some way.

Xxx

Glad you didn’t mind the long reply, I feel as though if things are relevant I need to add them lol!

I feel it might very well be price related. When I first went on flecainade I had problems with blurred vision in the mornings. It eventually eased off and stopped, my optician said, after checking my eyes, as long as it was only temporary it would be ok. Don’t drive so not that much of a problem, bit disconcerting though.

During this I was once given Mylan flecainade and it was brilliant, no blurring or any other side effects at all.

I came across a chart once during my searches for answers with this problem that showed the prices of different brands of Flecainade, Mylan was the most expensive, it didn’t surprise me. I never got it again! They must have been desperate to give me that!

😀

Off course it’s down to the price the suppliers can get it for! That’s capitalism!

Thanks for posting & all those replying.

Getting the Accord brand has become a pain again. I am in North East Hampshire and my surgery gave me another brand, despite my scrip saying Accord only. Fortunately I had previously built up a one month buffer stock of Accord buying me time. I then pushed them to either get it or give me a paper scrip to look elsewhere. Ten days later they got it in saying they were helped out by another pharmacy that they were 'friends with'.

🤞for next month!

All of my tablets seem to change brands on a regular basis these days, except the Diltiazem. I've had to be changed over to Ad Cal as they can't get hold of Accrete. One of my eye drops is where I'm sensitive so that is noted at the pharmacy it has to be Sandoz brand.

My patients (feet) have had issues getting medication as well. Don't know if this is just peculiar to this country or elsewhere in the World.

One of my patient's pharmacy told them it was something to do with Brexit.......... the gift that keeps on giving eh? 😁.

Not flecanide but I react badly like you to the generics. I can only take certain brands. |When one is in short supply I have to ring round evry chemist in town and in nearby towns to see if anyone has any in stock. I have found with some meds that even though the packaging is different, they are actually made by the same company; just packed by different distributors.

Gilli54 profile image
Gilli54 in reply to Qualipop

yes. I’ve found that with bisoprolol. I can take Sandoz or Almus and another one. All exactly the same except for the box. And my levothyroxine brand. Same for Warfarin. Crescent and Almus the same. I can take Bristol too but it’s not scored, so difficult to halve accurately.

Qualipop profile image
Qualipop in reply to Gilli54

I'm ok with Crescent, Teva and Bristol for most things but definitely not Almus or Tillomed. My oxycodone has to be branded Oxynorm which my GP names specifically on my script. I wish I could find out whether it's a filler or a preservative causes the problems. I definitely can't take yellow colouring.

I also have many drug brand sensitivities - Flecainide is one I don’t seem to have had problems with (touch wood not now jinxed)

Have you tried asking your usual pharmacist if they can check which brands are similar chemical makeups eg additives colourants etc - mine is very helpful with queries-don’t know if yours would be able to do checks or maybe a smaller chemist not as busy with more time

Asda did get a PI out of another brand for me, but it was different make up. But I could try that approach. Thank you. 😊
