I’ve been recently diagnosed with Afib and coronary heart disease and I’m taking Bisoprolol, felodopine and Edoxaban. Since taking them I’ve gained nearly 2 stone. Is this normal?

I take Bisoprolol 2.5mg x daily.Been on this dose for about 2 years. No increase weight problems. I would know as I am slightly under normal weight for height etc.

No, its not normal at all. Do you think that because of your recent diagnosis you may have exercised/been out less? Also could you be holding water in your body, that would certainly add weight?

I think it would be wise to have a word with your GP.

I take bisoprolol and edoxaban. I tolerate them well and I have noted no side effects. I have not seen weight gain listed as a side effect for any of these medications.Over what period did you gain the and have there been any notable changes in diet and activity?

Hi,

I've taken Bisoprolol 5mg, daily at night for 13 years. I also tdke both Ramipril AND Felodopine for high blood pressure for the same time period. No weight or any other issues. Have you read the bit of paper in the packet.

I had weight increase yes - I blamed it on the Bisoprolol as it does slow your metabolism. Unfortunately it was incredibly hard to lose the weight after I stopped taking the meds.

Knowing exactly what causes what though is very difficult to pin down as AF in itself will slow you down. 2 stone is lot of weight though to put on, over what period of time and have you looked at what and when you eat? If you are less active, as Jean suggest, which is normal with AF but still eat the same amount then that of course will = weight gain.

My wife was on Bisoprolol for 4 years. Lots of side effects including hair loss and difficulty managing her weight. She's always fitted but since taking Bisoprolol found dieting at best maintained weight, it was nearly impossible to loose it. Gone into persistent AF now and been on Nebivolol for just over a month. She's already lost a stone in weight.

I've not heard of Bevilol before, do you know if that's a new drug?

Sorry, typo (now corrected), in was Nebivolol

When I asked my cardiologist about my trying Nebivolol, he laughed and said "That's not for you". I wonder how anyone qualifies for that, wish I'd asked.

I’ve been taken off bisoporol and put on digoxin which so far seems fine. I never put weight on whilst on bisoporol. If anything I have lost weight but that’s probably due to anxiety and not eating like I used to before AF. No alcohol no chocolate cakes or biscuits and little if any steaks.

Rapid weight increase is, I'd guess, most likely to come from the body holding on to excess water rather than any build up of fat. In the short time it has happened, it's unlikely to be related to changes in exercise levels, either, even though I think it's easy to become more lethargic owing to anxiety with heart issues. Oedema (fluid retention) is noted as an unusual but accepted side effect from felodipine, and some have reported similar here from bisoprolol.

Generally, as you know, being overweight is not a good idea with any heart issue as it won't help blood pressure. I would definitely ask your doctor to look into this and to find the cause and a way out of it.

Hi there, the same thing happened to me and many people will tell you that it isn’t the meds but the fact that you are less active etc etc…. However I discussed it with my cardiologist who, without hesitation said it would be the Bisoprolol and lo and behold when I stopped taking it the weight came off!

Other drs since have agreed that in some people beta blockers can cause significant weight gain although in others no weight gain at all., fatigue and depression are two other side effects they mention.

Perhaps, if you are sure your diet and lifestyle haven’t changed (I ) then a chat with your doctor is called for?

I wish you the best of luck…

Hi

Um, no.

It is important to exercise and gently exert yourself.

You may need to have smaller portions.

Psychologically you may be feeling unhappy and comforting yourself with eating more.

But it doesn't help your AF, H/R and BP.

I'm on Bisoprolol and I've lost 3kg by last November because I'm increasing my walk distance and exerting myself in tasks. Now I've lost a further 3kg till now. Ideally if I can lose a further 6-8kg it would be ideal.

Use a measure tapr and measure your waist. Ideally 35" for woman 40" for men.

Pace yourself gently to a manageable achieving goal. Lower it if necessary but try and achieve a goal.

Life is full of challenges. It's healthy.

Early to bed and away from late snacks, early to rise makes you and I healthy. wealthy and wise.

Good luck.

I take PRADAXA 110mg x twice for my anti-coagulant.

I experienced the same as you while I was on Bisoprolol. I gained two and a half stone, in spite of eating the same and watching what I ate and exercising as much as possible. It was frustrating to say the least, as I had to buy larger size clothes plus the Bisoprolol made me feel as if I was wading through treacle most of the time. After my fourth ablation I came off the meds, apart from Apixaban, and within six months was back to my pre-Bisoprolol weight.

There is, as far as I know, nothing recorded that this could be one of the side effects of Bisoprolol so my take on this is only anecdotal. Maybe a chat with your consultant would be useful to see if they could prescribe an alternative. All the best for the future.
