Only your doctor can tell you how much Flecainide is safe. It can vary per personal depending on your medical history. If your doctor didn't say anything beyond 100 mg, that either means it's not safe to take more, or they gave you incomplete instructions. Call the office.
Good Afternoon Colutd,
Please contact your GP or consultant regarding dosages of medications. It can vary person to person, and be dependant on many factors.
Even after taking 100mg Flecainide it may still take longer than three hours to revert . If you're in the UK call 111 and ask advice, otherwise contact your GP or Cardiologist office and get their advice. I have been in a similar quandry before and called 111, they returned my call and checked my stats with me and advised on on what I should do.
My doctor told me to never exceed 300mg Flecainide in a rolling 24 hrs.
I started at 50mg 2x a day and had a breakthrough so I am now on 75mg 2xday.
I have only had 1 afib incident in the 5 or 6 years since. I'm trying to remember but I think when it happened I took an additional 75mg and waited an hour then took another 75 and it went away about an hour later.
I guess next time I will take 150mg at once. Looking at that rolling 24 hr period that would be my max PIP. Add the 150 to the 75mg I take every 12 hrs (150mg every 24hrs) and I am at my 300 max..
If I woke up with afib and was due to take my morning 75mg pill I could take the 75 and the 150 although I would probably take 150 and give it an hour before taking the last 75mg.
As AFib is progressive you want to minimize the events.
If you are not on a regular daily dose of Flec and are getting more than 1 event a month you might want to discuss starting a low regular dose of Flecanide with your doc as well as when and how much to take as PIP if you get afib while on Flecainide.
The other thing if you go on a daily dose is not to let your Doc. use the sledge hammer approach with dosage. When I had a breakthrough at 50mg my doctor wanted to double my dosage based solely on the fact that he didn't know there was a 150mg pill that you could break in half.
I had already looked at pill sizes before I talked to him. I wanted to give myself some room to increase dosage in the future should my AFib progress. Plus less side effects.
Like a lot of things it's easier to prevent than reverse.
many thanks for the responses. Still in hospital but back in rhythm and hopefully no need for the planned cardio version now. They used a flecanide drip of 150mg to get me out.
Great. I always prefer to ask the medics early 'What if...' so I can prepare myself for what might be coming down the track; others I know prefer not to know or discuss eg my wife! Also, my cardiologist warned against frequent use of PIP, which is a bit of a roller coaster for the heart and doesn't engender stability.
