Just for information. My partner (74) went back into Afib .Her cardiologist prescribed Amiodorone 3x 200mg daily. She went into Sinus Rhythm after 3 days and went down to 1x 200mg daily. After several days Afib came back. She went to 2x 200mg daily, now back in Sinus Rhythm.

She is also on Steroids and Methotrexate (which can cause arrythmias) for Giant Cell Arteritis.

HiI took Amiodarone for 10 weeks. I think the loading dose is longer than 3 days ( at least 7 - 10 days ) even if you do return to NSR . The dose is reduced gradually and the effect in most cases is positive. What was the advice of her dr when it was prescribed ? I too returned to NSR after 3 days but continued the loading dose for another 7 days.

Merry Christmas.

Thanks for replying The cardiologist told her to reduce dose to one per day but she has unilaterally decided to up the dose to two.(No cardiologist over Xmas of course).Merry Christmas

Well going from 200 mg x3 a day to 200x1 a day after 3 days is unusual. Two à day sounds reasonable while she waits to see her cardiologist . I wish you both well.

The arteritis will recover with the steroids, but as she reduces the dose, she might feel worse - very up and down. Our neighbour has been through the same and is now fine. There is some inklings of evidence of a link with covid (or even the mRNA vaccine), so she might ask about that, not that it will help to know what caused it.

Amiodarone is a very successful drug and one I was about to be given for atrial flutter but my ablation came in time. In low doses, with monitoring for side effects, and despite its fearsome reputation, it seems safe.

Almost the exact same thing happened to me. I was put on 4x200 a day for a week, then 3x200 for 4 days, then 1x200 maintainence. I went into NSR about 8 days in and after being on the maintainence dose for a week or so I went back into Afib. So I now take 1x200 in the morning and 1x200 at night. So far so good no adverse effects for a couple months now. My ablation is scheduled for the 30th. Crossing fingers..... will update.

Thank you for that. Good luck with the ablation. Hope you get it on the 30th. My partner is worried about having an ablation but that is the only option as long term Amiodorone may not be appropriate for her.
