Newby wondering what medicine to take for sickness and diarrhoea?

Hello everyone 🤗, this is my first proper post after dipping in and out to read your chats which I have found invaluable to settle my nerves somewhat after being diagnosed with Afib. However, I’m suffering with sickness and diarrhoea and am aware that while on the afib drugs you have to be careful what you take. I take Apixiban, Bisoprolol and Digoxin. Would anyone be able to help me with their experiences of what would be safe to take to try and get rid of this flippin awful bug? Thank you 🤢

Welcome to the form Ailsa.

I could point you to Doctor Giggle to help. For example, just key in..... Bisoprolol interactions with ? ..... and you'll get a detailed list. Rinse and repeat with your other meds.

However, I think the best thing to do is to call your pharmacist in the morning to find out what you can take that won't interact with the meds you are on. You need to be careful as some over-the-counter medicines can interact with afib meds and need to be avoided. Personally, I find my pharmacist has more knowledge than my GP about drug interactions - it's what they are trained to do.

Thank you for your kind reply Paul. I’ll try keying in what you’ve suggested and failing that and any improvement I think you’re right about ringing the pharmacy. 😔

Personally - I’d take nothing - but sip hot water, then clear broth when. With COVID I had constant sickness and diarrhoeas and was advised by GP to take nothing simply because without a poo test to see what exact bugs were causing the diarrhoea - better out then in.

Yes been sipping the cooled boiled water and that makes sense re taking nothing. I’ll see what the next couple of days bring but thank you v much for your reply. 😔

Flat 7Up is what our old family dr suggested, because no additives. Not a cure but better than water.

Oh thank you for that- I’ve not heard that one before. 🤗

I agree with CDreamer. get whatever it is out but do make sure you stay well hydrated. A little salt and sugar in the water will help or dioralite if you have any.

Thank you I can ask someone to get the dioralite for me. Salt and sugar I do have though 🤗

Hi, I have a stoma and take Loperamide, the active ingredient in Immodium, in tablet form to slow my transit time and improve absorption. This was prescribed alongside Flecainide, Bisprolol and Apixaban. Immodium is in capsule form so it can get through to the colon so I would not expect any problematic interactions.

Definitely take some electrolyte sachets or tablets if you have diarrhoea or vomiting. Keep well hydrated by whatever means you prefer. Eat bland foods when your appetite returns, but hydration is key for now.
