hello

I was in hospital this week with palpitations and breathlessness

Was discharged on Thursday and am back to Cardiologist in 2 weeks

I ve been prescribed 5 mg daily in the form of 2 x 2.5mg tablets. I felt a bit fearful at seeing a bpm of 53 bpm. So only took one tablet this yesterday and today. But my pulse is currently 87 bpm up from 73 earlier. I’ve felt feverish and tested positive for covid.

Is it ok to take the other tablet at bedtime ?

Yes 2.5 twice a day isn't that high a dose . Covid will probably increase your heart rate due to immune response. Try not to worry rest up and keep up your fluids. I had covid in January and was ok despite heart failure mitral regurgitation and AF

You have your cardiologist in a couple of weeks and should get more help

Hi, yes take it at bedtime. I haven't had Covid nor do I want it but I take all my 5mg of Bisop at night.

My take is even a raised HR from 73 to 87 would not attract any interest from your medical advisors ..... the CoVid would be of the concern to them. normal acceptable resting HR is in the range of 60 to 100 bpm.

My 5mg of Bisop holds my HR steady at around the 63 to 67 bpm mark and thats where I function best, maybe even up to 73 bpm on a regular basis.

I do hope you get well soon.

Hi yes, take the evening dose, I take Bisoprolol 3mg and my heart sits sometimes as low as 45, so not a problem.

hi treschere, just putting it out there , when i was put on bisoprolol my ep told me he wouldnt want my heart rate to go below 50, i know we are all different but maybe you could query.

Thank you Tomred, I would if it wasn't for the fact that my heart rate was always below 60 at rest and 54 at night before I started AF, so I feel safe at the moment, however, I won't be ever upping my dose I don't think.

I’m just getting over covid and generally take 6.25mg of bisoprolol a.m but while been Poorly with covid I’ve taken an additional 1.25mg p.m. which has helped, hope you recover quickly,

many thanks. My heart rate seemed to settle last night so didn’t need to take the other tab. It’s at around 68-75 bpm today

My understanding is that bisoprolol has a long half life (10-22 hours) that soon reaches a steady state of plasma concentration. This would imply that not only is once a day dodging sufficient, but that either timing or splitting a dose won’t make much difference.

my heart rate on bisoprolol was always 50_55,Electrophysiologist wanted it there. Took at night to reduce side effect of tiredness on it. Xx

I’ve take exactly that dose twice a day for a couple of years and working well. Good luck.

that sounds the sensible way for me. When you’ve been used to always being above 90 bpm to 120 - seeing a 50 something is scary so the splitting seems to be a good step forward.

Hello there I was prescribed 2.5mg Bisoprolol and my resting heart rate is at its lowest 41bpm and unless I am exerting myself sits around 45/46bpm. It didn't work for me because of persistent symptoms so I am now on Sotalol 40mg twice daily. No changes to my bpm but side effects of dizziness if I stand up too quickly but I asked my cardiologist if it was ok to cycle in moderation so when I'm feeling up to it I go for a short moderate 40 min cycle and so far it's managing to keep my heart rate manageable.

Hi dogsneedwalking, I couldn't get on with bisoprolol either so my EP put me on sotalol 40mg twice daily. I have had a few tachycardia/afib episodes so had meds increased to an extra 40mg in the middle of the day. Don't feel stable at the moment so may have to go to 80mg twice daily which I don't want to do. How are you on the sotalol and how long have you been on it?

Hi Karendeena, been on the Sotalol for 11 months but it really hasn't 'stablisized' the 'lurching/fluttering/missed beats' but I am trying really hard to just get on with my life but to be honest it's not easy as no 2 days can be the same. I also experience dizzy spells which can last for days then I can have several good days. The more I try to exercise the worse it gets so trying to find a 'balance' between exercise and keeping my heart happy. I might also add I have Hypothyroidism and type 2 diabetes. I wore I halter monitor for 2 weeks and that was handed back on the 1st September so still waiting to hear the outcome of that. Have been put forward for ablation but Cardiologist said it would all depend what they find. Keep well and take care of yourself.

Thank you, you too.

You are aware that thyroid problems can cause the afib? If this is treated you may not get the afib again/so much.

I get off flutters or missed beats, my EP says it's like a car engine when you turn the key and it doesn't start, that's the flutters, if it does start that's a full-blown afib attack! Not sure about you but I wait for the next one. I forget about it after a while thet comes back to haunt

Hi again, I have been on Levothyroxine for many years and get yearly blood tests for this. On my second admission for treatment the blood test stated that I had Chronic Lymphocytic Thyroiditis and they reduced my dose from 75mg to 50mg daily as they thought the dose was too high. I or my heart should I say doesn't respond to the adenosine, etc to bring heart rate down to normal rhythm so I had to have the cardioversion last time and spent night in High Dependency Ward. It's been ongoing for over a year now and my heart seems to be very sensitive to over exertion, tiredness, getting too hot, etc but as you say it's so unpredictable and can kick in at any time - I get them during sleep to and it wakes me up. I try and just get on with it but it does sometimes stop me in my tracks, just learning not to over tire my heart is hard as have always been very active but not anymore - it's a learning curve for me.

I get woken from sleep with heart disturbances too, it's very scary! Sometimes it flutters sometimes it pounds

Aye it's very sneaky ha ha. I keep calm and hope it doesn't last too long or stick on my headphones and listen to some nice music. Take care.

Hello, I take 5 mgs of Bisoprolol morning and night. I am just recovering from Covid and at the beginning, my heart rate went up from normally 54 - 64 to 78 which is no great thing. My Afib kicked in quite a few times but I was glad of the Bisoprolol. The lower heart rate you mention is probably helpful for your heart whilst you have Covid anyway as it means less work for the heart while you are fighting the virus. My understanding is that we shouldn’t mess with Bisoprolol as it is meant to even out the heart rate over 24 hours and stopping them or cutting them down wouldn’t give you any idea of how they were behaving anyway.
