sorry , the other concern is I have found out that the general anaesthetic which I am to have can be for several hours and have this added to my list of fears! I read that there is a dementia risk for older patients having a GA.

As you have said before, you are a worrier so is there any point in me saying don't worry? Whilst knowledge is power one must be careful where you look!

Age is a great risk factor for dementia. Yes GA can result in brain fog for a short while afterwards but it is not usually permanent. Over a five year period 2005=11 I had over 20 hours of GA and am still here at age 77. Yes I often forget why I walked into the kitchen but that is normal isn't it.

I forget why I've walked into the kitchen at my age and without having had a GA so there's no hope for me. 😆.

I came. I saw, I forgot why I came. I retraced my steps, got distracted and now I need to pee.

I'm an information gatherer aka worrier too. Sadly living is a huge risk. No advantage in worrying what might happen ( says she whose systolic BP is often over 200 just from entering a hospital OP dept!) At rest 126/70.Can I just say doctors want the best for you and give options accordingly.

Statistics don't help the individual only the people planning future care for the population.

I have read one or two studies, one from 2014, that showed some increased cognitive decline in a few patients, but it was unclear whether it was caused by the increased inflammatory effects of the operations themselves or the anaesthetics used.
