Help - Dodgy Keyboard

jeanjeannie50 profile image

I spilt tea on my PC keyboard a few weeks ago. Now it's driving me mad as some of the keys have started sticking - W & S.

Does anyone have any advice on howwww to cure it. I looked on YouTube and it suggested undoing the screws on the back of the board - am too afraid that wwwill be the end of it if I do that! It also said about prising the keys out and cleaning, but then again knowwwwwing my luck it ould never go back again. My car is in for repair and I may get it back tomorro, may not be until next wweek so can't rush out out and buy a newwwwwwwwwww one.

Hiya Jean ............ oooooh ...........noooooooo - if you were nearer to me I'd give you the one I am using at the moment. An offer which I suppose is as much good as a chocolate fireguard in this weather.

😢

More seriously if you are in the market for a new one have you thought of Amazon UK. I would recommend a Hewlett Packard or a Logitech. Some years ago a mate of mine did the same thing with his office keyboard - he knocked his whole MUG of tea over his ............. write off ! Sorry to say that unless there are any techno weenies on here with brighter ideas you may have to replace it.

😒

Thank you John, mine is a Hewlett Packard and I managed to get the keys off and clean behind. Honest it was so easy to do. I think I'll clean behind all of them now.

Wonderful.....u r so resourceful 😂😂. I might do the same - just to clear away dust.

Just make sure you put the keys back in the right place 😂😂😂😂😂😂

I'd never take them all out, that would be the end of my keyboard if I had to find where to put them back! Do it, it's so easy - just a silly little bit of plastic. I prised it off with a knife.

This week I've learnt about cleaning a keyboard and also about the ABS system on my car, the front passenger side brake wasn't working. I discovered that when I put my foot on the brake in wet weather and nearly slid into the car in front at traffic lights. Everyone kept telling me it was alright, even the RAC man who I called out. Made me feel like a silly woman! Then my lovely son in law took my car for a drive and agreed with me. Conferred with his brother and diagnosed what was wrong. Now it's at the garage being repaired.

It depends on the keyboard. Mine, for example, the keys just come off really easily so that you can clean underneath. Some keyboards though, it is much harder to remove the keys and easier to damage the mechanism. You could try to remove your right ctrl key by pulling up on it a bit (you likely don't use it for much so that's the safest one to test if you're not sure about your particular keyboard) - You may need to wedge under it with a butter knife or something - BUT if it's meant to come off it shouldn't take much force and would nicely slide off just pulling with your fingers.

My recommendation if it doesn't appear yours are made to come off is get a cleanable keyboard to replace! I have a gaming one now that the keys pop off, but I used to have one that you could literally submerge in water. Just search for washable keyboard! Bonus, they're also less likely to be damaged at all by spills getting into any electronic parts.

amazon.com/Logitech-Washabl... This is the one I used to have - doesn't appear to be made anymore :( There's definitely others though.

Try cryo ablation Jean. Your key board is now just like your heart!

I can't do without my heart or my keyboard Bob. It was so easy to take the keys off and clean behind, such a silly little bit of plastic!

Thank you all - I've done it! Taken the key out with a knife and cleaned behind, what silly little bits of plastic! I thought Hewlett Packard would be far more technically designed than that!

Don't think I've ever used it before!

A good friend's wife from 50 years ago was the last person I know who used "gad" but I now have an Israeli friend called Gad.

Bob,

I think she meant ....' God, I am sooooo clever'.

I was going to put that John, but thought I'd better not.

Well done Jean, another thing to add to your CV!

If you're even thinking of replacing it, maybe try and fix it first, either yourself or call a tech. I had a similar issue an just popped out the troublesome keys, then cleaned and then popped it back in. If you call tech support, they might be able to walk you through it. If that doesn't work, you can replace the keyboard if not too expensive. Another workaround is assigning the keys that don't work to another key that isn't used much but don't ask me how. Good luck and let us know how you get on. Depending on what your needs are, some of the new notebooks are not that expensive.

I’m late to the party Jean but was going to say put big girl pants on and try flicking one key off as it is so easy once you’ve plucked up courage to try. Really pleased you did. When I first tried yonks ago I was so cocky and pleased with myself I did the whole lot. Only a couple at a time otherwise I would be spelling @#£&xnya@1 or something as equally intelligent 🤣xxx

There is no cure, Jean, sadly. Under the keys is a rubber membrane and that can't be got at. Removing the keys is sometimes possible, but they are hard to get back and extraordinarily fragile.

I'm just about to donate a lovely new k/b and mouse to BHF aong with a lot of other stuff (I get these things sent to me to review). You're very welcome to it!

That's very kind of you Steve, but my keyboard is fine now, so it's best to let someone more needy have yours.

That’s good, Jean. I was going to suggest another trick, to put it in a warm spot for a while since any liquid under the keys takes a very long while indeed to dry out naturally. Sugary drinks usually kill off keyboards but I expect you don’t use that.

One option (not for the faint hearted) is to soak it in a sink (or bath) full of water and leave to dry somewhere warm for a few days. If it's your only keyboard, that might be a pain.

At work we used to prank some of our colleagues by swapping the G and H keys.

Many years ago, when keyboards were extraordinarily expensive, I spilt a small shot glass of Cointreau on the keyboard. I cleaned it up as best as could and said nothing to my husband. Several of the letters stopped working, and he took it to bits and found the sticky mess inside - no option but a new keyboard! Well done for sorting it out by yourself!

Have done this 2x and just take it to local computer tech shop and they replace key board, cost is keyboard plus £15. I wouldn't attempt myself without someone at hand to guide me. If you mess it up could cost a lot more than a new keyboard.

jeanjeannie50 profile image
jeanjeannie50 in reply to 2learn

That's what I was afraid of, but it was so easy. The top bit just clipped onto the base. I thought a really long piece of plastic or metal would be attached.

The ABS is the best thing you did Jean, as a sticking keyboard is not life threatening, a faulty ABS is, to you and others. The people who did not believe you 😱

Congratulations on fixing your keyboard though. It's good for making you feel in control.

All the best.
