Phlebitis in right calf - any tips?

I went to GP yesterday with pain in my right calf to rule out possible DVT - D Dimmer was negative so after exam decided it was Phlebitis. I have had varicose veins in that leg - treated about 40 years ago and never given me any bother but they seem to have revealed themselves again, unfortunately. Seems my only risk factor.

Prescribed anti-inflammaotory gel and compression socks, on Apixaban anyway.

Just wondered if anyone had any tips re Phlebitis?

I have had repeated episodes of phlebitis, in the same vein , the only advice I can offer , over an above your current treatment is to use an ice pack . I was told there is no real treatment for phlebitis other than the anti inflammatory gel and ice pack so I deal with it myself , not bothering with GP. It usually takes 4 to 6 weeks to resolve . Sorry I can’t be more helpful CD xx

Miserable for you I know but you've checked all the right things. Mum used to prop her leg up on a stool when sitting if that helps?

Thanks - doing that but any pressure on my calf causes pain so needing to sit sideways - putting stress on lower back. Always something.

Oh I do feel for you. I've had it a couple of times and like you I reach for the soothing gel. Fortunately mine usually only lasts 10 to 14 days.I do try to rest up but tgats mainly because its painful to walk on.

Oh the joys of getting old!

Thanks for your empathy. The older we get the more seems to go wrong! My Nan used to say ‘Youth is wasted on the young’. Now I am really getting what she meant!

When I hit 60 everything went south and what didn't go south was just worn out!

Hi CDreamer, I've had recurrent varicose veins as well. They were originally treated (butchered!) when I left the Navy in 1979. They then recurred in about 2000 and I had them treated again. They then reappeared a few years ago and had itchy areas where the veins bulged out a bit. I decided to get them treated and went privately to the Whiteley Clinic. They were great, treatments have moved on a lot and they were able to treat them in two sessions of a couple of hours with no need for GA, just local.

They also treat phlebitis, I noticed: thewhiteleyclinic.co.uk/con...

The NHS is not geared up for varicose vein treatment and I think the private sector has far better and state of the art equipment.

Thanks - that’s actually what the NHS site now says - if you want treatment you need to go private. Maybe it was always that way as I remember my Uncle had very bad VV’s and he had triple heart bypass and was told to walk but couldn’t because of the VV’s and had to go private - he was rather outraged about that! We are in the middle of house move - can’t wait for it all to be done - but when we are settled I’ll look at having treatment.

I was treated privately in the mid 1970’s and have to say it was very successful but I do remember the surgeon saying that I had a faulty high valve in my groin so they were likely to return so I don’t think they’ve done too badly.

The Phlebitis is less painful now with the anti inflammatory gel, walking and keeping leg elevated so hopefully it will resolve. It was ruling out the DVT that was important so that’s a huge relief.

I was given the same along with lovenox, injectable blood thinners. This was pre Afib days though the Afib did start a week later. Coincidence?

Thanks - You will never know ……

The GP said if it didn’t resolve in a week or so they would try a topical anticoagulant as she could see/feel the congestion in the veins.

I’d try my arnica gel, use it on my partial replacement knee as I get inflammation sometimes or my sacrum

Yes thanks - I used that before I got the script.
