I have seen a number of posts where people with Asthma have had problems taking Bisoprolol and wondered how widespread this problem was.
I have had Asthma for about 10 years now ( for some reason it suddenly started when I was in my early sixties) and I struggled with my Asthma inhaler for quite a while. My Asthma nurse thought that my Asthma was bordering on COPD and prescribed me a COPD inhaler about 3 years ago, since then my Asthma has been reasonably well controlled.
I was put on 2.5mg Bisoprolol at the beginning of December 2021 when I developed AFib. My hospital A & E initially prescribed Bisoprolol and my cardiologist subsequently confirmed that it was fine, both could see from my medical history that I had Asthma.
Apart from some of the common side effects such as tiredness and light headedness it hasn’t affected my breathing.
I would be interested to know if others have found that Bisoprolol does/doesn’t impact their Asthma.
Certainly when I was originally prescribed Bisoprolol back in 2014, the accompanying leaflet clearly stated that anyone with, or having a history of asthma should not take it. They may have modified the advice since then but there are alternative beta blockers which are more asthma friendly. In my case, I changed to a calcium channel blocker and have had no problems……
I dont have asthma but it certainly affected my breathing. My pharmacist explained that whatever is supposed to attach to your heart can also attach to receptors in your lungs, which are similar and that's what can cause issues.I discussed with my consultant and was put onto Diltiazem instead. I felt so much better.
