This may be a dumb question - but here goes. Not all of my palpitations feel the same. Sometimes there’s an extra beat and sometimes there’s a missing beat. Are these all considered ectopics? Sometimes they are very scary and sometimes it’s just a hiccup. So weird.

Are there different types of ectopics?
They can feel different and, on a trace, look different if there are several in a row. In fact the trace can look weird and like AF. But I was told that they are the essentially the same in the sense that an early electrical signal gets through to the ventricle and forces it to contract too soon, leaving a longer seeming gap until the next normal beat, which arrives with a bit of a thump! There are two types of these depending on where the signal arises (PVC - premature ventricular contraction, and PAC, premature atrial contraction).
All that said, I suspect there are other kinds of arrhythmia that we don't normally hear of.

I have regular ectopics of which I'm very aware and have done for decades; if I thought about it I could probably describe at least half a dozen different types of sensation going on in my chest!
I spent several months in AF, which for me was unpleasant, before being cardioverted. By comparison the ectopics, which are mostly considered benign, are a nuisance at times but no more then that.
If you can identify a trigger for them then great, you can simply avoid it. If not, my advice is to relax and accept them as part of you!
I recently found this YouTube video w a great explanation of PVC ectopics. The cardiologist who created it said he is planning to create more patient oriented videos. youtu.be/1LKg7d2gd-Q
