Hi everyone, has anyone done the fasting diet. Would it be ok with Af. I know we should all eat healthy but I was just wondering if any of you have tried.
Fasting with AF: Hi everyone, has... - Atrial Fibrillati...
Fasting with AF
I fast every day in that I only eat between 2pm and 6pm, and more often than not just once a day at about 5-6pm.
But I'm low carb so don't get hungry, so it's easy for me to do.
I think my dietary changes have improved my AF because I am now reducing my dosage of drugs with no effect so far (about a month). But that's probably the almost complete lack of sugar direct and from carbs, not the fasting? Just guessing.
I used to fast for up to 24 hours regularly (x1 week) when I had PAF and found it helped. I used to have last meal by 6pm and then only clear fluids and following day a meal at 6pm. I’m not sure I would want to do more than 24 hours but that’s just personal opinion.
Nowadays because I need to take food with my meds I’m unable to fast per se so try to limit food intake to about 10 hours within any 24 hour period. I do think you need to consider the meds, if any, you take because of how pharmaceuticals are absorbed.
Hi Gilly I don't have anything to eat or drink except water between 5PM and 7am so 14 hours a day 'fasting' interestingly doing this was recently recommended by Dr Michael Mosely. bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m000zt7d
When diagnosed with P-AF I switched my main meal to lunchtime so I am not eating a large meal then sitting down in the evening . That helped me to lose weight (1.5 stone) which I have not put on again . Then I progressed to having my last light meal at 5pm.
I find I can't eat large meals these days, my AF does not like a full stomach also I eat very healthily .
Hi Gilly. The celebrity chap Dr Moseley on TV researched and promoted the fasting diet some years ago, but then changed his mind and now firmly believes it is more natural and effective to fast every day for 14 hours, if you can. I usually manage 12 hours a day, 9pm to 9am the next morning, but would stretch that if my home situation allowed. I do feel much better for it.
It depends on whether having low blood sugar affects your heart. Some people find low blood sugar gives them palpitations which might then kick off afib.
i done intermittent fasting for a couple of months last year and lost a stone in weight and it was longest period without paf in many years i intend to get back to it soon
I fast for 16 hours per day. I only eat lunch and dinner. No issues for me. I’ve done this before afib and during. I find it actually helps to give your autonomic system a break,
Fasting puts alot of stress on your body, I would not reccomend it at all!
But I wouldnt call intermittent fasting a fast at all. Ketosis develops much harder than that. You can measure ketobodies in your blood by doing a bloodtest at some medical center.
Dont starve yourself, its not healthy for your heart to be deprived from food and minerals. Especially if you will develop B vitamin or magnesium deficits. In starvation, your body uses fat and muscle both to compensate energy deficite, this also means your heart which is just a muscle like any other.
Thanks everyone x
