I went through an abalation for my AF and later develope complications a few years ago. My pulmonary veins was stenose. I discover wrong doings by my doctor during the procedures after going through a second opinion.

Can anyone help recommend me a expert witness in this field (electrophysiologist) so that I can get a clearer picture ? Thanks.

Not sure what your motives are here jt85. Seeking an Expert Witness sounds as though you are preparing a case for suing your original Doctor. Obviously if the medic offering a second opinion is of the view that there were errors in your treatment, then probably he/she is best placed to help you. I maybe wrong (often am), but I’m not sure that members will be able to offer specific names.

If you are seeking an expert opinion for determining the best treatment options for your current situation then the AFA webpage provides a National list of AF specialists, link below which might be a good starting point. Just select UK in the country box top right of the page……

Hi Jack, my wife is currently suffering from Pulmonary vein stenose after going through an ablation. Yes we are suing the doctor with the support of our expert who claim negligence during the procedure. But the doctor’s expert has denied all. As a result we are heading to court. Can you advice what is best next ?

Nope, I’m afraid that’s not the function of this forum……

I don't know where you are but here in UK PVS is a listed risk during ablation which your wife will have signed acceptance for so not sure you have a case. As FJ has stated this is outside the scope of this forum anyway.

That's really bad luck but whether it is bad medical practice, I can't know. The area that is ablated to treat AF is very close to the four pulmonary veins and I have read that the anatomy of those veins can be very individual and vary a good deal, for example not everyone has four veins. To prove medical negligence will be hard indeed but I fully understand your feelings.

Thanks for your reply. My wife and I have seek a second opinion from another doctor from the same speciality in UK and he thinks my doctor has went in too deep and has misjudge and that causes my wife pulmonary vein stenosis. So it may not be due to bad luck. But the doctor denied all. PVS is most common but rare in the modern world. There are 2 such cases recently by the same doctor in my country Singapore.

By "luck" I meant it happening at all. EP cardiologists have a tough time ablating AF, I believe, as the area they know is faulty is often not a safe area to ablate, being either too near to the PVs, the pericardium or the oesophagus (the heart wall is paper thin in places, I gather). I have read that all three can be problematic. This often means, I have read, that the doctor holds back, and that the ablation eventually or immediately fails. Some doctors take more "risks", I suppose, and experience in doing the procedure is important.

I have only read about PV stenosis. Your poor wife. I hope that the doctor can alleviate the problem for her.

Hi jt85.

Hope things work out for you. While I understand, over here at least, that we sign an acceptance form of the risks involved, I don’t believe this form should cover negligence or incompetence from an EP.

Also while I understand that young Eps have to learn the trade so too speak, I don’t believe that they should be allowed to use unwilling patients as their training ground and the patient in question should be told if this is going to happen and make the choice if they still want to continue.

An inexperienced EP can ruin someone’s life permanently with this operation. It may be a fairly routine op in the hands of an experienced EP but in the hands of an amateur it can become extremely dangerous and damaging for the patient and they should definitely be made aware and have the choice if they want to continue.

It may be in my head but I’m starting to feel like I may have been unfortunate enough to have a trainee myself. I’m 8 weeks in and still can’t do much and whenever I try to do anything remotely close to exercise my heart soon gives me a kick up the ass! I understand it takes a long time to recover but it doesn’t stop your mind wandering and making you feel like maybe everything didn’t go to plan.

I wasn’t impressed with the EP when he came into the room 8 weeks ago. He couldn’t answer any of my questions and when I did get answers they were rather ridiculous to say the least. Like I can start lifting weights again the day after.

If something has gone wrong I’ll probably blame myself as if I wasn’t so nervous on the day I probably wouldn’t have gone through with it due to having what I felt was an inexperienced EP.

Anyway I hope it works out for you if it is proven as negligance. Just because you sign a form I don’t think anyone in any profession should be given a completely free ride to do what they want 👍

Hi ElliIt’s my wife in this case. She did sign a consent form but that doesn’t protect the doctors from malpractice. My wife and I have seek a second opinion from another doctor from the same speciality in UK and he thinks my doctor has misjudge reading my heart vein and ostium and went in too deep and that causes my wife pulmonary vein stenosis. But the first doctor denied all. By the way, PVS is most common but a rare complication after going through an ablation. It’s rare because of today technology. You should read up more about PVS since you took a much longer time to recover.

There are 2 kinds of doctors: the ones that save people and the ones that kill people. Unfortunately, the latter is not that rare and they have no regrets, no remorse and they don't give a damn for destroying a pacient's life.

Malpractice rules are a joke. There are tons of people struggling after their doctors messed up badly in the operating room, but you only see a few malpractice cases that actually resolved in the pacient's favour. Most of them don't even get a warning. They return the next day to do the same thing to others like nothing happened.

And the system allows it. We don't have a true entity that governs over medical practices. We need a reform to shake the criminal doctors out of the system and only leave the ones that are worthy of this noble job.

The concept of bad/good doctor shouldn't even exist. You are either a good doctor or you are not a doctor at all. Strip them of their medical licence, let them become truck drivers, a clerk, I don't care what, anything that's outside the operating room and consultation offices.

Finding a good doctor has become so difficult that when I find one I feel that God has answered my prayers.

Doctors who take their job seriously have my sincere respect and admiration but the ones that don't, I know that God will judge them for bringing pain and suffering in people's lives.
