Does anyone know if you can take apixaban as a PIP?

Has anyone tried it? If so how many mg did you take?

Apixaban is an anticoagulant and I believe from previous info on the forum you couldn't be sure that it would have time to work before a stroke hit you ! Much better to take it regularly so you are protected 24/7.

Because of reason stated by Bantam - I wouldn’t even want to try. It’s not like taking a PIP for HR or Arrythmia. Anticoagulation is a prophalactic treatment ie: you take it to prevent something happening rather than treat what is happening.

Hope that answers your query but by all means ask your doctor as opinion varies depending upon who you speak to and which side of the ‘pond’ you live.

Sorry I put in the wrong tablet I meant to ask if I could take Nebivolol as a PIP

Hi I take Nebivolol as a PIP. apixaban every day. No messing. I see you put the wrong named pill in your question but answered regarding both meds just in case. I take 2.5 mg Nebivolol.

Yes I take 2.5mg of Nebivolol per day but have never taken more when having an episode. I will ring my GP to see if it is okay, but with the reply’s on this forum it looks doubtful it will work.

Hello again. I only take the Nebivolol as a PIP not daily. Hope your GP can help but would it not be better to call your arrhythmia nurse? He/she may be able to have a word with your cardiologist or EP. My nurse is very busy I know but I have managed to get certain questions answered through her. 🌻

Yes I will try a arrhythmia nurse. Thank you for your reply.

This old chestnut comes up now and again and the simple answer is NO!!!!! Clots can form at any time so why risk it. If your CHADSVASC says anticoagulate then do so.

My understanding is that it prevents clots rather than dispersing them if you have one.......... there are drugs they administer in hospital for that. It would be a bit late for Apixaban if you suddenly had stroke symptoms, imho.

I meant Nebivolol not Apixaban

As leo marks said 'the life that I have is all that I have....' Why risk a stroke?

Sorry I did correct my question as I meant to say Nebivolol not Apixaban. I am fully aware of the implications of not taking Apixaban correctly. Thank you.

I am not sure about taking ACs as a PIP. My cardiologist prescribed Edoxaban for me (after I asked) if for peace of mind I decided to start taking it following an AF episode of more than 12hrs (time period open to debate) BEFORE any stroke symptoms, in case I developed a stroke. I should add I have only had 2 AF episodes of under an hour in the last 7 years.

This precaution may be appropriate for others in a similar position given the difficulties in getting timely GP appointments at present.

As I monitor American medical sites as well as UK and EU. It seems that our Cousins are starting to look at smart devices that could predict an AFib event. Warning you in advance to take anti- coagulants. I put myself forward for a trial fully in the knowledge that I wont be picked. As it is only for the USA. But I was interested in finding out as much information as was available. If I receive any updates I'll post.

I had Paroxysmal AF for 5 years and was on PIP. I don’t know about the drug you suggest. My PIP regimen was to take 50 mg metoprolol tartrate upon episode start followed 30 minutes later by 300 mg flecainide. It always worked. Normal sinus rhythm returned in 2-3 hours. BUT, the hangover from those drugs at those dosages was nasty for at least a couple days.
