Hi does anyone else on here suffer from a nauseous bloated feeling after eating ( not necessarily a big meal ) ? Medication or condition?

I used to, about 10 years ago, BUT not nauseous. Definitely HIGHLY PAINFUL and would trip me into AF.John

Yep, me too. Only since I've had afib and no idea why. GP has no idea either. I only eat plant based small-ish meals and only between 8am - 6pm. Last couple of years my waist has gone from 30 - 34 inches! I'm mystified.

Thank you Barney12 good to know I’m not alone ! Had a baked potato and green salad at lunchtime today and haven’t been able to have anything else all day as still feel full ! Could it be the medication do you think - I’m on apixaban ,Bisoprolol and flecainide but struggling to get the dosages right and ,like you , still putting weight on !

Definitely not the meds for me as I'm not on any.

I most definitely gained weight for the few years I was on Flecainide . As soon as I was switched to something else (by a new EP), I lost 24 lbs. very quickly -- the weight just dropped off. I've been steady at 120 lbs. for a couple years and haven't wavered. Can your doctor change your prescription? I haven't had the bloating problem you're experiencing. Could you possibly have acid reflux, as many do with a-fib? Also, my vegetarian/vegan friends have frequent gas/stomach problems from their particular diet, so perhaps that's what's causing your bloating problem.

Thank you Snowgirl what helpful people we have on here and so much information offered which I have found very interesting! Can I ask what you were moved onto from Flecainide as it hasn’t been doing it’s job very well lately ?

Hello Bowlingfan -- My EP switched me to Dofetilide (also called Tikosyn) and Digoxin; I also took my regular Metoprolol Succinate. After having Covid in December which caused my a-fib to increase, I fired my EP because of his indifference. My new EP at Cleveland Clinic in Ohio (US) has me on Metoprolol and Dofetilide after my ablation about 6 weeks ago. Yes, I agree -- this forum is very helpful; in fact more helpful than my first EP! Good luck to you.

Have you been tested for gastroparesis?

Do have colitis which is well controlled by medication and it is longer term so don’t think it’s the problem as have had colonoscopy and endoscopy but will investigate again thank you

I also have this fullness after the smallest of meals and only eat between 8am and 6pm the same as you. I'm also on Flecainide and have been for over 12yrs but also Omeprazole for reflux. My waistline has expanded by 4-5inches without any increase in food intake. If I eat a meal at lunchtime that's me finished for the rest of the day, so only have a small sandwich for lunch and save dinner til about 5pm then nothing else til the following morning. I was also thinking if cutting out wheat as definitely feel more bloated after bread/pasta/cake etc. Afternoon tea is the worst possible thing for me to eat, such a shame as people seem to think it's a treat for me on my birthday, or mothers day . I'm more inclined to think its the medication rather than the AF.

A few thoughts to explore1. What time do you take your meds in relation to eating? Make sure you're allowing time for the meds to be absorbed before eating as this could be a factor.

2. Bloating - check out FODMAPS on the internet. These foods are good for us but cause a lot of CO2 to be released in the digestive process. You may need to eliminate them temporarily from your diet to see if they're causing the issue.

3. Bisoprolol can cause digestive issues including bloating simply because it slows everything down. Make sure you're drinking plenty of water each day. Also, if you do some work on your digestion then you might find this improves.

4. You imply you're putting on weight. This might also be an indication that your digestion isn't working efficiently. There are some excellent books and podcasts on digestion that you can check out to get started. I think CDreamer pinned a post about these recently.

My advice - don't stab in the dark for a culprit like wheat. I've been there 😉 Go for a more holistic improvement of your digestion and you'll feel the difference every day.

I'm the same, but not all the time. I've been vegetarian for years but still had the bloating and discomfort. I switched to acidophilous probiotics and feel much better nowadays. I think as Singwell says, your diet may need tweaking. I did have a problem and took omeprazole for a while before my AF kicked in . I think digestion and Af sometimes go hand in hand. You can try this probiotic and see if it makes a difference.

Yes, every time I eat, can only eat small meals. Taking rivaroxoban, Bisoprolol and candesartan!

I wonder whether your symptoms might be gastric as well as cardiac, and, perhaps, gastric in origin. Have you asked your GP about this? It could be a hiatus hernia, for example. The link between gastric and cardiac is well documented, although still not well understood:

A bloated stomach, from swallowed air and food, as well as gas in the intestines, is known to be able to push the diaphragm up against the heart where the irritation can set of ectopic beats, themselves a known precursor to atrial fibrillation.

Constantly, I had stomach problems before AF ( in fact I think it caused it ) but since taking beta blockers I've had a gurgling right across and under my ribs and going up the left side and round the back. Often painful and uncomfortable, I'm on stomach medication and am trying to eating healthier . But it won't shift, I'm convinced its the tablets.

Try eliminating everything that might be an allergen - go back to a paleo diet.Eliminate cereals, gluten, carbohydrates ¿dairy? and then re-introduce foods one by one.

Try fasting and micro-biome bacteria.

I don't eat much but my girth has increased over a few months. At the same time my burping has improved in leaps and bounds. I can now say "helicopter" and "scuse me" while burping much to my grand child's amusement.

The 2 seem to go hand in hand. Big guts and burping.

I have been advised by my GP to stop eating bread. I started on Wed 12th May. So far my stomach feels less bloated and lost 2 IBS. Just a suggestion.

Hi grayjay, what do you take now in place of bread?

I haven't had bread now for a week. Instead I have had salads for lunch instead of sandwiches, no toast for breakfast, I have cereals and fruit. I've had Tortilla wraps twice. Maybe a few Cornish wafers with cheese for supper. To be honest I haven't missed bread at all. So far I don't feel so sluggish and think I've lost 3lbs in weight. Time will tell. Cheers.👍

Back when I was having frequent AFIB episodes, I had that same bloated feeling after eating regardless of how big of a meal I ate. I was reading posts on foods to eliminate, etc and was dreading having to give up foods I really liked. I don't know if this eliminated the issue or if it just went away on its own but I started taking a probiotic every morning and a Pepcid (acid reducer) every night and have not had any issues since.
