Advice needed please re: antihistamines and AFib

Hi I have been diagnosed with AFib prescribed apixiban and bisoprolol and I am aware that there are certain medications I should avoid taking as they could trigger an AFib flair up or change effectiveness of medication.

Bearing the above in mind has anyone on this site used antihistamines while in a similar situation to myself and found it safe to do so?

Constant runny nose and occasional headache is quite annoying.

Really would appreciate some feedback.

Have a rewarding day

Hi DizzyD, I have taken Cetirizine when needed with no effects on my AF

I do react to anti histamines so have a prescription steroid nasal spray which works brilliantly.

I have been taking Cetirizine for over 10 years no issues with AF.

I have a skin condition and take antihistamines regularly and it does not effect my AF.

I'm on Flecainide, bisoprolol and apixaban and I asked my GP a couple of years ago if I was ok to take 2x10 mg of cetirizine hydrochloride for occasional allergy flare-ups and was told it's absolutely fine. I've taken them several times with no ill effects except I'm always very sleepy the day after.

After my heart attack I was told I could only take Cetirizine because others would raise blood pressure. I took one Piriton tablet and my BP went through the roof. After my latest AF my GP prescribed Cetirizine because Rivaroxaban can cause skin inflammation.

I’m on the same meds and my Dr and pharmacist said Cetirizine is ok. I’ve had hives for six weeks after startingApaxiban + AZvaccine within four days of each other. Took them for five days then things quietened down with the hives. ( hives on and off for six weeks.) Good Luck.

Be careful with Cetirizine. It can cause rebound itching when stopped even in people who took it for runny noses and sneezing.

Thank to all seems like Cetirizine is the best option for me.

Have a rewarding day everyone.

Kind regards

Hello DizzyD, if you are at all concerned at introducing new medications or supplements to your diet, it is advisable to speak to your Dr beforehand just to check if any of the ingredients may cause an adverse effect on your current medications.

I seem to be fine on all antihistamines other than Loratadine - I got fast uneven heart beats from taking this years ago prior to my AF
