I suffer from
PAF about every 2/ 4 weeks for about 5 hours. NHS consultant suggested flecanide and now changed her mind and suggesting SOTALOL 40mgs twice a day ?
I also have ectopics.

Why do you need rhythm control tablets? Have you decided to have the ablation?
I’m taking Carvedilol at the moment but not working very well. The ablation is not probably for 4 months
I meant are you getting symptoms that you feel need treatment with potentially complicated medication before you have the ablation? Like chest pain or breathing difficulty or dizziness.
Horrible ectopics/palpitations etc. Oh I certainly know I need something ahead of an ablation.
Have you run out of the (safer) rate control options?
I found sotalol very successful for keeping me out of AF and in NSR whilst waiting for my ablation. (18 months)
Sotalol was like a medical cosh for me, the point is we all react differently to meds.
Get professional help, not from a GP but from a cardiologist, and report any problems. Too many people accept meds and suffer in silence, they need feedback to ensure you get the right treatment.
My best advice was from a specialist AF nurse, she listened and suggested a change to my meds, it was approved by the consultant and worked a treat for me!
Good luck
I don’t think it’s recommended now but some still use it
Hi Kags, I have been taking sotolol for 2 years for PAF. It seemed to work well initially. Now I’m on highest dose and thats working very well. I had no side effects. Everyone is different so be guided by your cardiologist. I may have to change meds soon as max dose seems to be raising my QT interval. Seeing cardio in 2 weeks. However I can’t take flecanide due to leaky valves but Ive heard many do well on it.
I’ve been taking sotalol for a few years. 40 mg dose initially. New dr insisted increasing it to 80. And though it has helped control my tachycardia (mostly), I’m pretty tired, dizzy and droopy most of the time. He wants to try a different med (tikosyn), but given the need to be in the hospital for 3 days to make the switch, I’ve been postponing.
I had an ablation for PAFIB 2 years ago. My AFIB is gone but I now have frequent (and very annoying) PACs. I can't help thinking that the ablation contributed to the PACs. Was on flecainide for over a year. That helped but I still had them. I'm now on Sotelol 80mg 2x daily and it seems to lessen them but they're still there. I'm probably stuck with these things for the rest of my life.
