CLARITY...OR LACK OF IT.

I’d like to just make a bit of a statement about sending/responding to items on this forum. I’m not the most brilliant at conversing on these platforms but I think responses would be much clearer and concise (as far as I’m concerned) if senders or receivers knew exactly where the messages were being directed. I sometimes feel unsure if the texts were directed to me or someone else. Correct me if I’m wrong but do you all not think that it would be a good policy to state the name of the person who you are directing the message to ❓❓

Interesting Tickerprobs, if you want to reply to the originator of the post then you use the reply box immediately under the initial post or at the end of the post. However, if you want to someone else who has contributed to the post then you use the reply box associated with that person and bears their name. At the top of where I’m typing now, it says “Reply to Tickerprobs”. There is no reason why you cannot to them at the beginning of your reply, just like I did here. If that’s what you are referring to, I hope it helps.....

Yes !! Flapjack !!...THAT IS EXACTLY and PRECISELY what I mean. No doubt whatsoever who you’ve directed your message to. 👍👍👍

I thought that was common usage but maybe we need to write an explanation of how to use the forum to be included in the pinned post for newbies. Familiarity takes time. I never knew that using capitals represented shouting for example and that I should use italics to emphasise things.

Thanks for that Bob but it’s sometimes the incoming stuff that I’m not sure of it’s intended target‼️‼️...Putting a name at the beginning of a message takes away any doubt.

in reply to Tickerprobs

When you press reply the name of the person your replying to comes up at the top. If gouve clicked on the wrong person just look to make sure the right name is at the top if not click out of that reply and find the persons comment you wish to respond to and click the reply on the bottom of that. When you have clicked it it will say "reply to ...." And the persons name.

in reply to Tickerprobs

Ah the incoming will have your name on it. So at the top of this you'll see your own name and that means the person is reply to you. I'll reply to somobe else below so you cab see the difference.

in reply to BobD

Now I'm replying to bobd and you can see at the top your name isn't there at the top the way it was when I replied to you. Hope that helps. I was very bad at not noticing peoples names at first to...I think its very small and not noticeable at first but now I have got in the habit of checking it is OK.

Thanks FlapJack, useful info which I hadn't twigged.

When you reply to someone it comes up with their name so you know exactly who's responding to who. I'm responding to you now and if you look above the message it will say imgonnamakeit and tickerprobs at the top ...

Sorry Gonna but no mention of ‘Tickerprobs’ at all‼️‼️

And this is exactly my problem.

in reply to Tickerprobs

Here you're replying to yourself so nobody will grey a notification of a reply with this ...except maybe you will. And if you look beside your little circle it says tickerprobs~>tickerprobs meaning you've replied to yourself. Are you on a phone or a laptop Mac or PC? Maybe iT's different on your end. I can take a look I have so many old laptops PCs etc that barely work but I can look and see how it might br appearing for you. I'm on android phone so that's how its showing up for me anyway.

Hi Gonna...I’m on IPhone. Here and there, I can see ‘the sender’ a small bent arrow and then ‘the recipient’ but generally all I can see is the poster and the statement but not directed to anyone, unless a name appears in the statement.

in reply to Tickerprobs

Ah if its not got a recipient then I'd say that is the same as through desktop where it just means its a reply to the main post. Mine is also indented when its a reply to a reply but its only a tiny barely noticible indent. I'll ask my mom if I can look at it via her iPhone. I've been meaning to get her to join. It is kinda annoying that its not the same for everyone. It sounds like the iPhone version just isn't as clear. If you go into the app store (iTunes I guess) you can comment to the developer of the app and they might improve it on the next update. It really would be helpful if everyone saw the same thing and clearly enough to see on a tiny phone. A lot of the way things are designed is by the young for the young, in total ignorance of how difficult it is...and I'm only 40 and I struggle! My mom and aunt can barely make a phone call these days with all the "updates" ...

Gonna...you mention that I’ve sent a message to myself and only I will be able to read it. So how could YOU read it❓

in reply to Tickerprobs

I didn't say only you could read it. I said nobody would get a notification for it. When someone replies to you or you to them they get a notification of the reply via email. Then they can click and see what the person has responded. So for example I get an email saying " tickerprobs has replied to you ...." If you don't direct it to a particular person then the email notification doesn't happen. You can still read everyone else's comments to each other but it will only alert you that someone has replied to you if they hit the reply to you button. If they reply to themselves I don't know what happens then. The internet might explode lol!!! I do get other email notifications as well on topics it suggests for me and comments on the threads I'm following etc.

Thanks Gonna...when I answered to myself, I was just wanting to extend or add to what I’d just commented on. In future I will always state in my comments, the name of the person I’m targeting and then, as far as I’m concerned, there’s no doubt who is TX er and who is RX er.

in reply to Tickerprobs

I get ya. But if you reply to yourself they won't get a notification...so go back up to the person your replying to and reply to them again to add more, rather than reply below your own comment if that makes sense. Lol! Best of luck you'll get the hang of it just remember that the reply directly below each persons comment is to that person and you should be fine! 💚☘Happy Irish day!

Thanks you’ve been very helpful Gonna. As far as I recall, I always push the reply button below. I think the problem is people at the other end don’t do that. A happy St Patrick’s Day to you too. To be sure to be sure and I hope all your shamrocks are little ones. 😂

in reply to Tickerprobs

On the desktop windows version you see replies to the main thread have only the name of the person ...and if its a reply to a persons reply you see the persons name and then it says in grey " in reply to" and then the person who's comment the reply is named ....maybe you're on a Mac? Or maybe for some reason the grey writing isn't showing up on your screen? If it doesn't say " in reply to" that means its just replying to the main topic or question. Hope you find it but let me know what device you're on and I can try it on some other device to see how it looks.

in reply to Tickerprobs

Ok just at the very top of each comment beside your little roundy photo of a sunset I think it says tickerprobs~>gonnamakeit and then above this it will say gonnamakeit~>ticker props and under that it gives a time when the message was sent so I see you replied to me three hours ago. Just right above this box of text.

You can see that fancy Santa replied to spudly here in the picture. Above that spudly is just replying to the main thread question so it isn't directed at anyone specific.
