Dang virus

belindalore profile image

Just read that the virus is spreading in South and east England. It has mutated into a new strain. It's not known if it will be more infectious or more easily transmitted or if the vaccine will still be effective. It just doesn't stop. This virus is like a horror movie. Please everyone in the UK, stay extra safe. And keep the hope.πŸ™

Don't let your guard down like some of the covididiots here in the US. Going to be people here flying all over for Xmas. 😞

All virus's (virii?) mutate so no surprise there Belinda. Just amazed it took this long! Plenty of covidiots and deniers here as well I'm afraid.

There have been different strains around for a while now. Is that the same as a mutation?

BobD profile image

Mutation is how the different strains get started Fancy.

So that means it's mutated before a few times, since last year in Wuhan. I'm pretty sure I heard a virologist on the radio yesterday say they didn't have reason to think it would affect the efficacy of the vaccine. Finger's crossed.

Yes - I was reading up on virus behaviour and a lethal virus such as Ebola doesn't spread as easily as a less lethal one because it kills most of its hosts, so most viruses mutate to be more infectious but less lethal. That way, they don't kill the host and are more efficient at spreading themselves.

Yes all life forms strive to survive. "It's life Jim but not as we know it."

In fact, the author of the book described humanity as behaving like a replicating virus.

Humanity - the greatest threat to Planet Earth. But that is another story.

Hi belindalore, we're all tired of seeing these "Covidiots". Best to just buckle up and look after ourselves and loved ones. God bless.

Nothing new in that, they all mutate to ensure their survival. We will prevail.

According to the above article, 12000 mutations had been recorded by September ! So nothing new in mutations for a virus.

IMO until the medics had confirmed the "new " mutation was any more of an issue than the previous, then it should NOT have been mentioned in the way it was.

Suspect it's as much to do with lockdown relaxation u-turn justification in the UK than anything else.

(Not medically trained)

Just keep safe by doing what you were doing.

Best wishes

Scientists publish for good reason mainly peer review is an important part of knowledge development. I don’t think the medics have any say in that. Nature is a science publication.

Sorry maybe phrased the reply badly . IMO the Government broadcast should not have mentioned the new variant UNTIL they know it behaved differently to the existing ones . After all we (generally) are ignorant as to whether the covid - 19 we have is variant 10 or variant 12000 or anywhere in between or beyond.

"New Scientist" take on the new variant.

No idea there had been that many mutations! I really shouldn't listen to the news media here in the USA. They have really gone downhill and report so much false news. Now that I think more about it they were probably trying to make the UK look worse than we do. When it's the other way around. And you're right. Just keep staying safe. πŸ‘πŸŽ…πŸŽ…πŸŽ…

Of course you can believe most media in the US -- just not Fox "News" a/k/a Faux News.

belindalore profile image
belindalore in reply to djmnet

Oh it's not just Fox news. It's all of them anymore. I remember the old days of Walter Chronkite. He reported the news. He didn't take a story and twist it all around and then throw his two cents in like they do now. News now, to me, is as bad as some tabloid magazine. πŸ˜’

Sorry to all, especially Michael Jackson, just couldn't resist it.

Scientist have found a rare mutation in some goats...

It's called the "Billy Gene" and causes them to believe that the kid is not their son.

The mutant strain was identified in September so as Bob says, no surprises and it is expected to continue to mutate - that’s what virus’s do which is why we need the annual flu shot to programme our immune systems to fight it.

On the positive, hubbie was vaccinated yesterday and the roll out programme is on fast forward!

The annual flu virus changes every year so the vaccine we get is pot luck it’s the one that works. You pays yer money and takes yer choice.

Keep smiling it could be worse.

Merry Christmas to everyone. 🀢🏻 May your hearts be full of joy and not AF and frogs.
