Furosemide side effects

I am suffering severe hearing loss and inflammation of big toe joints. I understand these are known side effects of the diuretic Furosemide. It was prescribed by GP because I have slight heart failure and various heart valve problems and in danger of water collecting round organs, although I have no overt oedema, no ankle swelling.

I want to cease this particular diuretic. Does anyone know of one which is less toxic, or better still any natural dietary diuretic? I already drink a lot of tea.

Glad of any advice as the hearing loss in particular is very isolating, especially in lockdown.

My Cardiologist has just prescribed Furosemide for me as he says it is the most effective diuretic. I am to take an increased dose of 40mg in the morning and a further 20mg at lunch time. No side effects so far.

I have previously been prescribed Spironolactose, Bumetanide and Amiloride. None reduced the swelling in my ankles.

The Bumetanide is EVIL. I developed the most awful itching and discovered that it causes "nettle rash" in 1 in 10 people. My GP indicated that the itching could go on for months. Well, Yes, it does. The intensity of the itching defies description. For your own sanity you should refuse this ghastly stuff if offered.

I took furosimide for HF but it caused me problems too.

It was OK for three days then I got problems so stopped it.

I was told to weigh myself each morning and, if my weight had suddenly jumped up and hadn't dropped again after a couple of days of drinking plenty of water, to take furosimide for two or three days.

This was OK'd with the HF specialist nurse and has worked well.

I had HF at level 4 at the time caused by taking Tramadol that brought on arrhythmia. (40,000 ectopics a day!!!)

Once I reduced the ectopics the HF went down to level 2 and is now manageable and I haven't had to use furosimide for the last two years. (I'm pleased to say.) :-)

Wow, severe hearing loss caused by a drug would be most alarming to me. There are a few things I would do.

First research the diuretic drugs class, especially the drug furosemide so that you will learn as much as possible about the drug you are taking considering its side effect.

Second, now combine your two concerns (Furosemide and hearing loss), plus add 2020 in the address bar to get the most recent articles. I did that and found this blog that gave a plethora of comments :

forum.hearingtracker.com/t/...

If you read down the blog, a pharmacist answers with alternatives to furosemide plus a plan of action.

Third, have a serious discussion with your GP about the hearing loss side effect you are getting, and pronto, so that something can be done, especially an alternative diuretic.

Fourth, have your GP refer you to a hearing specialist.

No way should you take a drug to solve a problem only to create another serious problem when there are other drugs.
