Hi all, I am going to have cataracts removed hopefully in the next few weeks. Anyone have any experience of being told to stop Apixaban before the procedure?

You need to speak to the team performing the procedure but generally don't take the pill that day and start again next. Different surgeons have different ideas though.

I was due to have cataract surgery in April - cancelled due to COVID - and the surgeon was quite happy for me to continue taking Apixaban.

Thanks Finvola. I have been told by the hospital that I could possibly be waiting for up to a further three years on the NHS due to the pandemic and what might be a second spike come this autumn and winter. Hence I am going private.

I am going to the eye hospital on Wednesday about possible eye surgery. I will ask.

If they do the operation it will be on the NHS at a Nuffield (private) hospital.

I had a cataract done early this year and was told no need to stop any medication

I had cataract surgery last year. Before op was told not to stop taking Apixiban and I was fine .Good luck.

Thank you very much. I have looked it up on Google (know I shouldn't have, but couldn't resist). The op seems to be not as scary as I feared.

I am a great believer in research because knowledge is power. Research removes fear as you have found out. Granted, sometimes there are contradictions in the research which will take time to ferret out the truth. In my opinion, keep on researching; it's good for you.

I worked in a hospital as a pts advocate ,though am an old nurse! As part of my induction I watched a cataract op in the eye theatre.

I was amazed how relaxed the whole procedure was and how the patient chatted and laughed. It made me feel that if I had to have that op...which I will eventually, I wouldn’t worry.

Good luck ,it will be good to have it over.

Oh, thanks for that Mouchkin. I have an appointment this afternoon with the consultant and will then hopefully have it done in the next couple of weeks.

I had cataract surgery 2 years ago. The surgeon specifically told me that I didn't have to stop Pradaxa and everything went well.

I had mine done last year. Never had to stop Eliquis. Procedure is now totally bloodless. Easy peasy. I am in US. Not sure if that make any difference.
