PMS and AF

Hello there. Hope you are keeping well. I have a question specifically for the ladies and yes men too are welcome to share the experience of their loved ones. I just want to know if anyone of us here who have experienced an increased palpitations pre-menstrual or during premenopausal period that has led to AF. Can the palpitations that are normally cause by lower Estrogen level or hormone changes lead to AF? How do you deal with that? Thanks. Appreciate your response.

Just to be quite clear here, palpitations is merely a term which means a person is aware of their heart beating. It does not refer to what it is doing.

Hi Bob! Thanks. I should be clearer in my questions actually. I had atrial fast beats/atrial tachycardia. Sometimes it will lead to AF sometimes not. Always happened just before the menses. Would like to know if others have this as well.

Hi - yes, palpitations week leading up to my period was one of my premenstrual symptoms. I think it is quite common. My sister and I would refer to them as palps ’ - we knew what was coming. I am 66 now and in permanent AF but it doesn’t mean all ladies will end up with AF and my brother has permanent AF so....I just think some families have a tendency to things like asthma or are great singers 😀 and my family have heart issues and worry a lot 🙃. Check out Dr Sanjay Gupta’s video on Estrogen and AF. I have been on HRT for many years and believe that is why I have never suffered the same debilitating symptoms many others have with AF. I just pray that I’m not told to come off it at my age because it’s been a godsend.

Hope that helps patxx

Hi Pat. Thanks for sharing your experience. Glad to know that HRT worked for you. Will check out Dr S Gupta’s video that you mentioned. Thanks again. 🙏🏽

Hi, I also have atrial tachycardia (focal). It has been under control for the most part with Metoprolol for the last 1.5 years. I definitely notice an increase in ectopics in the two to three days before my period. My ectopics in general have calmed down a lot over the last few months (yay!), but they increase a lot during pre-menstrual. They make me very anxious which as we all know does not help. I mentioned this pre-menstrual/ectopics connection to my cardiologist during a check-up in December, but he didn’t really say anything.... anyway, you are not alone!

Hi. Thanks for the reply. Yes same here. The ectopics increase pre menstrual and it’s annoying 😃. In your case, does the ectopics lead to AF?

No, thankfully! That would be a nightmare as I am extremely symptomatic (haven’t had an AF episode in a while).

Hormone fluctuations (I am menopausal) definitely cause my heart to misbehave with ectopics and brief bouts of tachycardia, but I have not gone into AF from them.
