From high to low blood pressure

I had an episode of high blood pressure, resulting in me taking Bisoprolol and apixiban. After three weeks I had low blood pressure and went back to hospital where they took me off Bisoprolol and said this was what was causing the low blood pressure. I have been off them for three days now and my blood pressure is 97 over 75. Is this still too low and if it is will it right itself or will I need to go back to doctors. Keep feeling weak and light headed, is this normal after coming of Bisoprolol afte three days.

Yes, when you come off of pills it can take your heart a little time to get used to not having their restraint.

As Bob has said drinking more water can bring your BP up (I was once told this by a nurse in hospital). My BP is often the same as yours and that's what I do. Perhaps when you get up in the morning drink a glass or two over a couple of hours to set you up for the day. I must admit I find it easier to drink hot water (slightly cooled, than cold).

No I don't think your BP is exceptionally low, but if you are feeling odd at that rate then try the water. My diastolic is always low, usually about 62.

When you take your BP, do it once and take no notice of the first result, wait 2 minutes and then do again for a true reading. Just done mine as I'm telling you and its 120/73 - pulse 69. Now why is that all so perfect on the morning I'm going to see my AF nurse! For the last 8 months my pulse has been 80-120!

Thanks will drink more. Just needed reassurance that I’m not going crazy. Never had a problem with my heart until three weeks ago, so maybe over worrying. I’ve never been a big water drinker but am doing now. Been making sure I drink 2 litres of water a day, but will drink more. Thanks for your help.

Hi Jean. Try taking some relaxed deep breaths before taking your BP and watch it come down further. I cannot explain but I think I have a tendency not to breath much and I am sure it pushes up my blood pressure for the first reading. I normally do 3 tests.

Yes, I know about that and it's amazing isn't it! Deep breath in and a quick huff one out. The slightest stress send my BP soaring.

I got monitor because as soon as I walk into a Doctors Surgery mine hits higher end of normal. I once asked them to take it again just as I was about to leave and it was normal. Only 3 minutes between tests.

It will take a while for your BP (blood pressure) to bounce back up. Usual rule of thumb is that it's only a problem if it makes you feel dizzy or faint. Moving your legs about (ie walking on the spot) when sitting before you stand up and co thinking once you are up, just for 10 secs or so will activate the calf muscles (these act as a kind of pump, heart even, to the lower body squeezing veins to return blood upwards to heart and brain against gravity). Think of the types of foot movements they get you to do on planes (remember those!) against DVTs.

Check with your doctor if it too bothersome.

Hi thank you for that. I now know why doctor was feeling my calf muscle. Did not know that the calf was a pump to the heart. But it makes sense now you’ve put it like that. Will definitely use that.

Well, not an actual pump, but it squeezes everything back upwards. I only have puny calves though......

I will do, I have been trying to drink water like a mad person. I think I might be panicking a bit, but this site puts it in perspective. Thank you

Thank you for that, it feels as though you know where my thoughts are at the moment. This is certainly something I will try. Today I don’t feel too bad at all. I have a hospital appointment later this month now and when I have had the test I should get PIP to use when it goes too high. I only went to low blood pressure when I was on Bisoprolol, now I am off them I hope it will return to normal. Thanks
